iRiver h10: 6GB or 20GB
I've gotten the all-clear from the wife to finally buy one. I've been pondering the 6GB, but just realized the 20GB is about the same price. Clearly, 3x more capacity is a good thing, but what are the trade-offs?
Weight? -- 4oz to 7oz doesn't seem like much difference
Battery Life? -- the 20GB actually has more (20 hrs vs. 12 hrs.)
Durability? -- I like the solid-state 6GB over the HDD 20GB, so this one seems to be the key.
My mp3 collection is about 60GB, but 6GB at a time seems like quite a bit.
Has anyone bought smaller plaers, just to upgrade later? Or bought 20GB ones and never use more than half?
... must avoid clicking .... until I do .... proper research .....

I will never buy a HDD mp3 player after owning the creative jukebox. That thing was the biggest piece of **** I've ever owned.

?? I had one and LOVED it. I thought it was awesome. I had the original 6GB version that was the size of a large CD player.

Here's how i see it, if you plan on going on a bunch of long trips and you listen to tons of music, so much that trying to whittle it down to 6 gigs will not make you happy, then get the 20gig model. I know there are times when i really feel like listening to some random song and it's nice to have all of your songs on the player at once (or a larger percentage of them in your case).
But, generally for me I don't need that much music. I usually only listen to a few cds at a time, and i don't go on a lot of long trips. I ordered myself a 4g ipod nano, for use at the gym (solid state) and stuff like walking to class. So if i'm missing some song or cd, it's no big deal, when i get home i can throw it on. You have to figure it out based on how you are. Usually people who have a lot of space don't even listen to half of the songs on their players.

I take my notebook that has about 30gigs of my MP3s on it with me all the time, so I can replace music as I wish. In fact, my main player right now is a 256gb n10, because it's the best compromise between size and usability that money can buy.
edit: To answer the original question...
Is the extra drive space worth the extra bulkyness? I can't answer that for you.

I think he meant 256MB. With the laptop always nearby, you can change/refill often.
Thanks for everyone's input. After considering that I'm used to my 6 disk changer in the car to get me through long trips, the 6GB H10 amounts to a 50 disk changer. I think that's plenty! And like mentioned before, there's just something cooler about these small solid state designs.
So I've gone ahead and made the eBay plunge. Grabbed a red one for under $150

nice deal rock;
negating the solid state vs hdd for a moment (though this can make/break the choice by itself) -- another thought is if you do not have a laptop as a backup with you most times - i wonder, can use that extra hdd space as data storage (10gb music + 10gb storage) - perhaps even as backup for digital camera compact flash type stuff -- but then again i'm the type to separate and keep separate.
btw - isn't the iRiver being killed off - or is that another i-something ?
(don't mind me - only 2nd cup-o-joe this morning and i'm still groggy)

Rock, I'm pretty sure the H10 uses a hdd, not flash memory.
It says HDD on the chart and I believe the 6gig H10 is an updated 5gig H10 (hdd based) with more capacity. (to compete with the 6gig Mac Mini's and 6gig Zen Micro's) http://www.iriveramerica.com/prod/hd/h10_6gb_gray.aspx

Ah, but according to the iriver site it's 'internal memory'.
But most things just list it as 'internal capacity', but it most of them call it 'micro-drive', so I'm not sure what this is.
It's too late now anyway I just hope it gets here before I have to leave for Japan!

I'd opt for the smaller one as well. Good choice.

Interesting. I did notice the types of players are categorized in the 3 black boxes with drop down boxes at the bottom of the page. Either way, you'll enjoy the H10 and congrats! I have an Iriver 190T and love mine.
PS. I'm so envious, I want to go to Japan. What cities are you going to?
