short battery life

Toshiba Satellite M55-S135

The battery life on it is very short. Like 1 hour, this is under normal use.
I has a 1.5ghz celeron m
80bg harddrive
dvd burner
wireless capability.

the battery says 2000mAh on it. dc 14.4v
li-ion battery pack.

I purchused it in like new condition. I orginaly had xp home edition on it, but there was the same thing with xp home, now I have xp pro and still same short battery life. Any Idea what could be the issue.

Firstly, the Celeron-m does not have enhanced speedstep, so it does not have the power saving capabilities of the pentium-m meaning poorer batterylife. If you're not already doing so, I'd make sure you're switching to whatever battery profile the Toshiba offers.

Secondly, that's a low capacity battery - by comparison my laptop uses a 9 cell 7200Mah battery, even my PDA has a bigger battery than that. It may be worth looking into availibility of a higher capacity battery, manufacturers often ship a low capacity battery and then give the option to purchase a better battery. Other than that, you're only option is probably to buy another battery.

Thanks for the quick response. If I was to put in a pentium m cpu inside the laptop, then would this battery be able to last longer?

Apperently it only doublues the time for 1 hr to about 2 hrs.

Do you know how old the laptop is, or how often it had been used? There's a pretty good reason that manufacturers warranty batteries for a year at most: They lose capacity over time and with repeated use.

Like John pointed out, that battery's capacity is tiny. Most Pentium M-based notebooks come with at least a batteries in the 4400+ mAh range. Machines based on more power-hungry CPU's often come with even bigger ones in the 6000-8000 mAh range.

If you're going to get a replacement battery (and I would), you'd probably want to spend a few extra bucks to get the 12-cell model, which is rated for 8600 mAh. Toshiba's part number for the 12-cell battery is PA3400U-1BRS and HERE is a link to it on toshibadirect.com.

(According to the info on Toshiba's web site, the Satellite M55-S135 uses 10.8 V batteries. Since that conflicts with the battery info you posted above, you'll want to do a little research and double-checking before buying something.)
