PC Upgrade, PLEASE READ
Okay everybody I am alomost there. I got my Xtasy 6564 (GeFrce3 Ti200) and I ordered my ECS K7S5A for NewEgg.com the other day. All I need now is a new processor, HSF, and DDR RAM. Here are my options:
AMD Athlon 1.4GHz 266FSB OEM- $99.00
Coolermaster DP5 HSF- $16.00 (Adds a 1 year warranty to the CPU)
Shipping- $6.95
[B]Total- $121.95
AMD Athlon XP 1500+ 266FSB OEM- $119.00
Coolermaster DP5 HSF- $16.00 (Adds a 1 year warranty to the CPU)
Shipping- $6.95
[B]Total- $141.95
All the prices are from Thompson's Computer Warehouse (www.tcwo.com). I checked and they have a 6.0/7.0 on www.resellerratings.com. I was just wondering if the XP CPU provides the extra "pazaz" over the 1.4GHz T-Bird for the $20 more. I am on a tight budget so every dollar counts. I am prolly going to start out with 128MB PC2100 DDR RAM from Crucial and then buy another 128MB stick after I get more money. I was thnking about going with Windows 2000 Pro. Is there any compelling reason I should want Windows XP over 2000 Pro? Any and all suggestions are welcome.

crucial is a good choice for the ram. winXP did fix some problems that win2k had. But winXP is gay(you can dumb it down a bit) which basically makes it just liek win2k but with out some of the problems. liek some peoples had problems wiht their sound working in win2k.

I'd go with win2k since it will run better than winxp. XP really needs 256MB to run well, whereas 2k can run ok with 128MB. I'd personally much rather have at least 256MB with either OS. As for the proc, I'd go with the XP.

Windows XP is way better than Windows 2000 for games. It doesn't have the lag load times imposed by Win2k. It also is more compatible with old stuff and new stuff. I like it a lot, just be sure to read how to tweak your mouse in WinXp because it is really messed when gaming at first lol..
Sucks you ordered an ECS K7S5A.. when you asked I warned you about that crap motherboard. I've used it three seperate times and I never want to see one again because it is lame and likes to freeze at 133/133 bus settings. I hope you have better luck because I sure as hell didn't. Should have got the Iwill XP333 like you were considering before.
Get the Athlon XP instead. It is cooler, and more likely not to have problems on the K7S5A. That mobo has problems with getting enough power to the CPU and the Athlon XP uses less power so get that CPU.

I installed winxp a couple days ago (clean install, had win98se before) and I love it. Much more stable, video is of higher quality (dvds, divx...) and internet is faster not to mention the os is much more stable. I have no qualms with win xp. It has a different look to it, but I kinda like it.
My 2 cents.
I'm also using the corporate pro edition of xp...computer as follows:
asus a7v, tbird 900mhz, 256 pc133 sdram, 30gb 7200rpm, gf2 gts 32mb, and other fun stuff

You can reset the look and feel to the classic. I did it and it feels normal except in load times and stability. It rocks. On the other hand.. some programs which aren't updated to xp as yet are giving me problems (cough adaptec cough).
Oh well, I can wait till they issue xp compatability upgrades I guess but other than that.. I can honestly say XP is good. Could be better but it beats win 95/98/ME in both stability and performance. I wouldn't know about 2000, never tried it.
