HT Speakers I was given...

Well I was given a set of 4 older Cerwin Vega AT-12s... They look and work pretty well except the rubber gasket around the woofer has started to breakup and peal off...

So I was wondering on your thoughts of those gasket replacements? I have seen a repair Divx explaining the procedure.. But not sure if they are worth the time, effort and a few dollars into persuing.

Or should I just toss out these 50lbs boxes :P

But yeah I would like to ummm... Use them with my PC and TV, and something like that :P For some uber HT setup :P :P

it all depends on what type of sound you want. cerwin vegas are known to really "thump", but sometimes lack in detail. if you're after lots of bass, i'd go ahead and repair them. new gaskets shouldn't set you back too much, and the replacement procedure isn't too daunting.

bottom line - if the sound suits you, they're worth the time and effort.

At the VERY least, keep the boxes and put some other speakers in them. High quality speaker boxes aren't cheap.

But I agree, the boxes are well made with a metal support frame. The finish on the box is well maintained and they look great for a 10+ year old speaker set.

But the rubbers will only cost me about $20 per set. So $40 and I can repair all 4 speakers which are not blowned.

I know I cannot just dump any speaker into the box, as the porting, footage, etc are not matched to whatever speaker I place in there and it would resonate correctly. At least that is what my lack of experience dealing with sound tells me :P Or at least the little people in my head that talk to me tell me :P

I have done reconing and re-edging on speakers. You should check the speakers you got pretty thoroughly before deciding they just need a new edge. If they have been run without the surrounds (or even moved around), it is very possible that the cone may have shifted and you may now have a voice coil rub.

If the coil is rubbing, you need to recone the speaker. That's probably not worth it for you.

If everything checks out and you really just need to glue a new edge on there, go for it, it's pretty easy and you'll have yourself a pair of working loudspeakers.

Is there a way to tell that without cutting the dust cone out? The original owner said he stopped using them when the rubber started to break away.

yea, sit the speaker totally level and push down gently (and very evenly) on the cone. If you feel the cone rub, you have a problem.

As usual thanks bro, I will try that. If anything what kind of replacement speakers can I get? The cabinets are in amazing shape, and I can see use the cabinet for another set of 12" woofers.. Not sure if the cabinet would resinate correctly due to cubic size.

JBL 2212 or 123A for a vintage sound.

Eminence 12LFA for a more modern/club sound.

The only change you will have to make to the cabinet is retuning the port.
