PSP, was at Bestbuys and ToysRus today

    Brooklyn, NY

I was at ceasar's bay today looking for a gift for my friend's kid. hes 9 years old and have a PSP.

so I was walking around BB and came across the PSP section.
BOY WAS IT SMALL. I would say like bout 20 or less game and none of the them were of any interest to me. and there were plenty of UMD movies but they were more expensive than their DVD counter part.
and the accessories selection was not that big either.

then I went to Toys R Us same thing. their PSP game selection was like 10 games. and none of them interestes me. ohh there's UMD movies also but still cost more than DVD counterparts..

on both stores DS games and accessories is like at least double the size of the PSP.

and in general the PSP games were $40-$50 while I see some nice DS titles (not necessariliy the newest) for around $30.

seeign the lack of quality titles. I don't think I'll be interested in a PSP no more. that and the fact that sony don't support the homebrew community...

The PSP is a bust. It has the potential to be an amazing console, but it just isn't going to happen. The library is small, the games are expensive, and the movies cost more than DVDs. If they really want PSP to take off they either need to:
    1) Open it up to some more 3rd party software.
    2) Bundle UMDs with DVDs.
    3) Let you hook the PSP up to the TV and use it as a video player with some kind of TV output so you can use the UMD on the TV.

At least then the PSP would have some value. As it is now, you've just got this machine with 1 or 2 great games, a half dozen mediocre games, a half dozen crap games, and a buttload of UMDs that are pointless because they cost more than a DVD. I mean who is going to buy a movie on UMD and on DVD. That's $50 for a single movie.

I use to think that the PSP will slaughter the DS since it's very sexy looking and more powerful than the DS. (similiar to the IPOD . the only reason it did so good is because of the design/looks)

but alast sony F**ked up and now. I'm not getting it for the following reason.

    - expensive $250 vs DS $149 (and the DS price frequently include a good game, ex nintendogs, mario cart)
    - screen refresh is not that good (I notice ghosting)
    - sony expensive memory stick instead of SD cards. (screw you sony. I got bunch of SD cards already)
    - not much innovative and quality games such as the DS.
    - no support for homebrew. (MAJOR NO NO in my book)
    - do not allow self encoded videos to play full screen. (in order to protect the UMD movie sales). Has this changed?
    - couldn't careless or give a damn about UMD movies.
    - battery life not nearly as good as the DS

I think Nintendo will still keep the winning belt for the Portable game console

some of your reasons are null though...

    - whats wrong with MemoryStick.... its not like you HAVE to buy one since it comes with a 32mb one which is perfectly suitable for saves... its not like the DS even supports external memory...

    - And when has Nintendo ever supported homebrew?

    - And if you dont care about UMD movies, i wouldnt consider that a negative... its just an extra that doesnt effect everyone

It was also way ahead of its time (color screen in the 90's!) such that the time's current technology couldn't support it. Had Sega invested more in producing a second generation, then it might have been something.

Virtual Boy was just a disaster plain and simple. I doubt little could have saved it.

not really, I seen him with it and he takes care of it and put it in a case when not in use.

but there is a point about a 9 year old having such expensive toys.

I might be old and bitter (I'm 29) but when I was a kid in the mid 1980s the most expensive toy I got was probably a basic business calculator that my parents found in the train. (but then my family was poor)

    ... kids these days.

I swear I have to be the only Virtual Boy fan (besides my friend who I converted ). Yea, it was awkward to play but it was still fun. Definitely not for the masses though.

As for the PSP...mine has mostly been collecting dust. I agree with all the points on here about it's shortcomings. I won't get rid of it though because I think it might get good eventually. I actually started playing it a lot again this week because I picked up Midway Arcade Treasures and I can't get enough of Mortal Kombat 1, 2, and 3. I love em all and they play perfect. Granted, I probably could've been playing them a whole lot earlier and for free if I was into the whole Homebrew scene but I don't like how games force you to update then you have to do workarounds for the homebrew to work, etc.
