For me, it has to be my personal "Best game ever made" award winner...and that is Sid Meier's Civilization 2.
Since first getting the game in '96, I've probably logged well over 1,000 hours in it, with probably nearly a hundred individual games. I don't think any single game has kept me so interested for so long.

More recently though (MUCH more recently), Oblivion looks like it could break the top 5 not far from now. I'm already over 50 hours in, and I haven't played past the 4th quest of the main story yet. I'm also only into my second quest in the thieves guild, 3rd quest with the fighter's guild, and first quest with the Mage's guild.
Everything else has been taken up with just randomly exploring the world, investigating caves/forts/dungeons, and playing through the Dark Brotherhood missions...which I still have about 7 individual "contracts" left with them as well. Probably pretty fair to say I've barely scratched the surface, and I'm already 50 hours in. I can EASILY see how you could spend over 400-500 hours on this game if you played through all the guild quests, explored the different caves, and everything else there is to see and do.

And that's not even counting the different experience you would have if you played through the game a second time with a completley different character class and type.
    Overwhelming.

I can only remember so far back, but CivII was a huge timesink for me. GT3 I finished through to 100% several times. Right now it is WoW. I have 3 toons, levels 53, 31 and 25 and I have spent an unbelievable amount of time playing.

The original Doom had me under a spell. It was probably the first pc game that I ever really got into and I played the whole single player campaign over and over again constantly.

Recently, I've become totally immersed in Gothic 2. I was getting very excited to pick up Oblivion as soon as it came out, but it's on hold now because Gothic 2 is taking up all my gaming time----excellent game.

Aside from Doom and a few other FPS's most of my 'time-consuming' games have been RPG's ---Baldur's Gate 2, System Shock 2, Diablo and Morrowind.

scratch that...thinking back I think the orginal X-wing game holds the honor of longest game played...I'd play it today if it ran on xp...and I had the disks.

I got bored of that after ~ 30-40 hours when I became essentially invincible. All those "fetch this" quests didn't help.

For me it would be either X-Com/UFO or System Shock 2 for regular games, I also spent days on The 4th Coming (MMORPG) back in the days (this experience still makes me avoid WOW like a plague).

I guess I should've clarified that the longest playing game that I still play is Jagged Alliance 2 and all of the mods. I've been playing that for I guess 6 years now and have played through it a few times...and just going through once takes forever. One map in combat mode with 3 squads can take me easily 2-3 hrs to complete.

I -loved- the original Jagged Alliance. I also played Fallout for a damn long time. For those of you who have never played Fallout, I highly recommend you do so. It's alot like Shadowrun crossed with Diablo. It's so great!
