    info on video card

I recently bought a Geforce MX 4000 128mb 8x agp video card for my p3 system(550mhz + AGP 2x). It worked great and really sped the old system up I was impressed by the performance in SOF2 with maximum textures and high resolution. It also got decent score in 3DMark 2001SE, I haven't tried 3dmark03 yet but intend to.The manual says it has DirectX 9 support as well as DirectX8.

What good 3d/FPS games should I be able to run with this card?

If I upgrade in the future to AGP 8x with fast processor how much more speed can I expect to get out of this card?

    Some feedback please

it doesn't support dx9 or even dx8...it's compabile with them though...but to be dx8/9 capable it needs to have vertex and pixel shader support and support other options which it doesn't have...because it's agp 8x I'm gonna guess it's a geforce 4mx which is really somewhere around a geforce 2 pro-ultra in terms of speed and feature set...it'd be hard to find a game released in the past 2 or 3 years that doesn't require the use of pixel shaders and ontop of that will run reasonably well on the card

it's at best it's a 4 year old card based on 7 year old technology...paring the card up with even the fastest processors in the world wouldn't help too much...reguardless of the video card there's no real performance difference between agp 2x/4x/8x...if you're upgrading to a new system I wouldn't go less than geforce 6600gt...

sorry to be so blunt but that's the truth

I think that card is a good fit for a 550Mhz CPU.
If you got atleast 256mb ram you should try UT2K3.

    UT2K3
    ?

I have 384mb ram and it ran Soldier of Fortune 2 (Double Helix) very well which is DirectX 8 game with good graphics.

Is there a possibilty Call of Duty 1 or BF1942 might run reasonable well?

I finished COD1 on my MX440 64mb and it ran "reasonably well" but dropped horribly sometimes to like 10 fps in smokey situations and stuff, if that card is anything like what I had you could run COD1 on low setts 1024x768 or so if you enable DX 7 rendering in the options, I think it's there I don't remember exactly but I remember there is some DX option that makes it run faster.
But yea, don't look for more than low settings because I had P4 1.6Ghz 512mb SD 133 AGP 4x with my mx440 and even with that it couldn't run on higher settings because of DX 7 hardware that comes with those cards.

I had it on maximum detail/quality settings in game and it worked well at 1024x768 and also at higher resolutions but a bit slower.

Anyway the card's a big step up for me from my old ATI Rage 128 VR 32 mb 2x card

I'll try 3dmark03 and the demos of COD and BF1942 and see what I can get out of it for now.

I'm surprised p3 550mhz doesn't limmit you to older games.

gamer 101, when you talk about upgrading, are you talking about the motherboard also? Your present MB is limited to a 2x AGP?

It does limit me in games depending on how much the game utilizes the video card rather than the processor.

A game like SOF2 looks like it can take advantage of the video card and run decently despite the slow speed of my p3 maybe because it uses OpenGL + D3D

I tried NFS Hot Pursuit 2 (DX8 game) with the new video card and it looks like it relies on processor more because I had to lower detail to get more speed

I am well aware how outdated my system is now with an IBM 686212U workstation mobo with AGP 2x slot, 100FSB, and SD-Ram. I intend to upgrade to a modern faster system when I get enough money right now Im pretty low on the funds. Probably AMD A64 with new mobo with AGP8x + PCI-E

in that case...try out the original hl and mods if you haven't...since sof2 runs ok try out other quake 3 engine games...star trek elite force comes to mind...return to castle wolfenstein and there's probably others out there

I would think that it would run any fps from about 2002-2003ish or earlier. MOH and COD will work on it. I played MOHAA on a gf2mx400 at lower resolutions and solved it with it.

I think your CPU would be limiting in those games though..so you might want to double check the min. cpu specs.

I tried the demo for COD1 and it ran very good detail and speed at 1024*768
COD looks like it could be much better than MOHAA which I have played all three releases before

BF1942 demo also worked well although the CPU did drag it down more

thanks for the replies and feedback on my system
