I wanna give eve another chance but I just got really bored last time I played...

Its not an MMO, but Guild Wars is very heavy on grouping. Each group member needs to have a good idea of how to use their character and which skills to equip for different scenarios, the strategy present in the game is just excellent.

Some MMOs I've played where grouping is essential are City of Heroes/Villains (boring game imo) and Final Fantasy XI (finding a good group early on is a PAIN, but if you manage to get some buddies of various classes around your level the game is really good).

Dungeons and Dragons Online pretty much only grouping, everything is group group group....I hate it lol. I mean I like grouping, but when your friends aren't on you wanna have something to do man. Same goes for Coh and Cov, at least Guild Wars has henchies. But yeh, if you really love grouping and thats all you want to do and don't care for pvp DDO is the game for you.

Im gonna go against the majority (since i know this forum typically hate this game), but FFXI is the answer

No MMO game has ever had so much depth as this game, wether its game strategy, the things you can do, the AWESOME story (better than the main FF series imo), the music, the art, the FF universe as a whole, its simply the best MMO i've played.

There'll be grind, to a point where i quit for a few months when my red mage got lvl 62, i bought WoW and played it for a while, only to find out that.. its a MMO lite, as in, for a massively multiplayer game, it fails, its too user friendly, parties are pretty much only for raids and elite dungeons, everyone's a jackass since they're self centered, etc. So i went back to FFXI and my rdm is now lvl 70.

I would say, the first 30 levels in FFXI are pretty boring, not much you can do in terms of abilities, the starting zones are pretty bad looking, valkurn dunes is hell for newbies, and there's so much content that its almost too much at once, confusing the newbie more than necessary.

    Here's my rdm

Here's a video to give you a taste of what some cutscene looks like @ later levels, Chain of promethia is simply AWESOME

    random screens of FFXI story

And if you dont mind spoilers, here's the video of the end of Chains of promethia, kickass OST i tell you

And how long have you actually played?

1st thing about FFXI on PC is, dont ever use the mouse, the game is fully functional (and a lot more efficient) with the keyboard only, or buy a gamepad.

I've played EQ, WoW, EVE, dark age, etc. FFXI is still the best experience i've had in a MMO game. I know quite a bit about its system, i've leveled red mage to 70, ninja + dark knight + thief + warrior to level 20, black mage to 37, white mage to 38 and beast master to 27. Currently finishing my red mage all the way to 75, then i'll level the nin & drk for my subjob for solo/HNM.

Care to elaborate on why FFXI sucks? There's haters of X or Y game for every genre and every game out there, i know this forum doesnt like FFXI but its PC focused site, and most players back in the days that tried FFXI here tried to make it work with the mouse, mostly complains about controls. Keyboard only, or gamepad, the way to go

Here's a website thats pretty popular for HNM screens/video/chat

    http://theorderls.com/

I recommend watching the video called "Aspid ATTACK!", "Nidhogg Slayers" & "Tiamat Tonight!"

Cerberus looks like a mean mofo

Bahamut too (not up to that mission yet)

PVP in FFXI is ballista, nation vs nation, its not instanced ala WoW, there's a schedule in specific zone, level cap etc and you go there, get tagged for your nation and you start PvP. FFXI's PVP is pretty balanced, havent played much of it but it was pretty awesome. The herald (npc that start the match) hides a petra (ball), when a player finds it he has to bring it to the other's nation rook (goal), players can dig up items along the match to replenish hp, mp, all sorts of ailments and cures, can restore job abilities timer, etc etc. If you win, you get money and ballista points which you can use to buy better ballista items before another match.

But FFXI is mostly based on team PVE, and when the team is kicking ***, you're killing things 10+ levels above you or getting XP chain #7 or more, its like when a puzzle falls into place, its "the zone", everyone knows their job and how to play efficiently to bring the most to the party, they'll eat expensive food to buff up their stats just to make the party as efficient as possible, thats the kind of community FFXI has, someone with a gimped subjob, slacking on equipment or a plain shitty player wont last long, you may think its elitism but that actually cuts the men from the boys, unlike WoW. It makes the party system that much more efficient at later levels.

PVE side, things you can do.. (i dont think even i know everything..)

    -Standard quests
-Nation missions (seperate missions for all 3 nations which you can switch btw)
    -Zillart missions
    -Chains of promethia missions
-Burning circles (using beastmen seals you find while XP'ing)
-Kindred seal (using kindred seals you find while XP'ing @ lvl 50+)
-ENM (like BC but no seals required, only a time duration on when you can redo them)
    -Escort missions
-Assault (much like ENM cept you have 1 tag to enter every 24 hours, rather than fight notorious monsters, you have set goals in each assault) <- my main source of money since the expension btw, assault points = moniez
-Besieged (protect the al-zabhi city from monster invasion, totally NUTS! you get imperial standing + xp, up to 700+ peoples in the zone when these happens)

probably forgetting a few but thats from my main experience.

Crafting and other non PVE activities are

    Fishing
    Smithing
    Goldsmithing
    Cooking
    Leatherworking
    Bonecrafting
    Clothcraft
    Alchemy
    Woodcrafting
Clamming (dig up the seashores for "stuffs")
    Chocobo digging
and soon chocobo breeding & raising

Big point in FFXI is the job system, unlike other MMOs, your character's race is the only thing that will remain always the same, you can switch jobs at any time, you dont have access to advanced job until you're lvl 30 and unlock them though. Subjob is something that adds immense depth to what you can do in this game, subjob is always half the level of your main job, so say, my RDM is lvl 70, the subjob will be level 35, i get all spells and abilities from the job (except special 2hour ability) from the subjob. Makes for some very interesting combos. Red mage for example, probably the most versatile job in the game and the hardest to master, i can sub Black mage for more intelligence, more focus on nukes and larger MP pool, also drain/aspir spells to replenish my HP or MP from the monster with low mana costs, etc. White mage sub will give me more mind, all ailment cures, AOE cure spells, better magic defense. Ninja sub is mostly for solo but combined with Red mage's jack of all trade survivability, it becomes the best solo combo in the game @ high levels, stoneskin (dmg absorb) + Phalanx (dmg reduction) from red mage + utsusemi (shadow image, absolutely no dmg on you) = one tough red mage. Red mage with beast master sub for farming help, with taming a pet you have a 2nd buddy, thief sub for more chances to get rare loot, dark knight sub for access to vorpal blade weaponskill + stun spell, summoner sub for avatar buffs, mainly used for group support, or bard sub for the ultimate debuff + buff combo in a party. Thats versatility and only this game have offered this in the MMO world, there's still combos i havent played yet, Blue mage is probably the next big thing for red mage subjob.

    Standard jobs when you start

    Warrior
    Monk
    Thief
    Red mage
    Black mage
    White mage

    Advanced jobs @ lvl 30

    Samurai
    Ninja
    Dragoon
    Ranger
    Dark knight
    Paladin
    Bard
    Beast master
    Summoner

Advanced jobs @ lvl 30 added in the treasure of Aht Urghan expansion

    Blue mage
    Puppet master
    Corsair

    Lots of choices

Hey now, while its a good game and the story is certainly better than most standard FF games, EVE Online is MUCH deeper and has an awesome story as well

Unfortunately for this thread, grouping really isnt as essential as it is in FFXI in EVE.

EVE is deep? I thought it included mining and getting money over and over.

Are you serious? EVE is by far the deepest game I have ever played. Did you play when it was in beta or something? Back then (and for a few months after launch) mining was the only real way to make money, but thats certainly not the case anymore.

Nah never played it, just heard to stay away from it. That was awhile ago though. So, what makes it deep?
