Litestep shell
Saw some desktop pictures in another thread, looks fun! Some questions before I prink my finger and sign my soul over to the devil with blood...
1. How easy is it to get RID of if I don't like it?
2. Which installer? Egods, if there's one thing I hate about open source it's that everybody and their entire extended family has files to get. I should be ok if I get the "Open Theme Standard" Litestep installer, yes?
3. Do any other programs give a hoot about Litestep? Does anything refuse to run when it hasn't got explorer.exe around to stand on?
Gracias

I'm not a user, but am also thinking of making the switch. Any Litestep users care to comment? In the meantime Momaw, go here to get some of your questions answered.

the install is pretty straightforward like a normal program install... the version i reccomend the most is "litestep-distrobution (lsdistro)"...
getting rid of it is pretty easy too... u can do it manually by setting the command line to the original explorer path and hacking the registry or there is an uninstall feature.... the bad thing is that if u mess up a critical file of setting in LS u try to get rid of it... it will mess up your registry and u will have to reformat. so i wouldnt put anything permanent on the HDD while u r learning how to use it... when u first install it, it will look like crap and run like crap... it will not look like my screenshot or the othere u see on the web, you have to download and manually install the themes that you want and u have to edit some command lines for programs that u want to interface using litestep (ie winamp)... also some programs have compatibility issues with the GUI so u have to check the LS website constantly for fixxes and patches... thats about it... good luck...
what sets alot of people off.. is the MAC like interface... it is very simple and clean and without alot of tweaks... alot of options are grouped into different menus whereas they used to be a quick icons.

I've been a long time user (something like 5 years now).
It's not too hard to get rid of - just have the .reg files on hand that'll reset Explorer. Even in the early days with no installer, it's pretty hard to corrupt anything beyond repair.
As for the installer, I can't really say since I just do it manually. I have moved to using ShellSelect at boot to make the choice between LS and Explorer easier, but I rarely use Explorer anymore.
There are some installers that don't know how to behave, but that's about it. There's still the StartMenu heirachy in your profile, so most things are happy. All the Windows stuff runs fine (Control Panel, etc.) and Office works without a hitch. Some of the Explorer mods won't work, but they shouldn't.
One thing to watch for is that theme support has really gotten out of hand; I hate how everything revolves around themes now. I don't use one at all (real minimalists don't use a minimalist theme!). Then again, that's what a lot of people like, so....

I'm going to install it as soon as I get home (I'm at school right now) in about 10 minutes or so. Where is a good place to get some themes or skins, or whatever they are called? I will probably end up making my own if it isn't too difficult I've done skinning for program UIs before, but I'd like to see what kind of skins are out there. In one of the screenies someone posted they had the winamp song playing in it's own little task bar thingamajiggy. Where can I learn about the command line editing that you mentioned kpxgq?
