Entertainment Weekly: PS3 v.s Wii v.s 360

While keeping an eye on reports of diehard gamers (and more than a few eBay entreprenuers) braving long lines and cold nights — and even facing down guns — to purchase their Sony PS3s and Nintendo Wiis, we spent the last weekend putting these new consoles, as well as the year-old Xbox 360, through their paces. You might be surprised (or outraged) by our grades. So please keep in mind that these reviews reflect our immediate post-launch impressions — we promise to re-review them within the next year.

The first batch of games is a letdown: Most of them look no better than what you can see on the Xbox 360 — and none offer any revolutionary step up in gameplay.

were they supposed to? guess they forgot this console was supposed to be released when the 360 was and was supposed to compete directly with it and is therefore just as old as the 360....they make it sound like the PS3 was just thought up and released....

I still find it kind of annoying that every review has a line that reads something like this...."Even though the PS3 is massively more powerful than the 360....." Ok, nothing about the games bear that out, and most tech heads agree that it doesn't appear so either(most agree the 360 has a better GPU). It is that they truly don't understand the tech stuff and just regurgitate what sony told them? Believe your eyes and your ears...the PS3 is roughly equal in power to the 360.

I've been reading some articles about the Cell vs 360's triple core. They did an indepth analysis and found out that 360's cpu does more gigaflops than the Cell. I wish I could find it. I do hate how the media has bought into Sony's hype about the Cell be all powerful.

In many ways, it was even worse with the PS2.

I think it's irresponsible, but most of these media outlets would simply say something like "Well, we're only reporting on the perceived impact it's having and the way the public is seeing it".
Either way, there's no doubt everytime the story hits the mainstream media, it helps Sony. People see huge lines for the system, and news reporters in electronics stores reporting on the "overwhelming popularity of Sony's newest video game console!", and it's infinetly better advertising than anything Sony could come up with themselves.

I don't completely know about the specs of the multi-core processors in the 360 and PS3 but Sony marketed the Cell as twice as powerful compared to the 360. Developers such as EA and others stated in EGM that it would take beyond the life cycle of the console to truly tap the power of the Cell. On that note, I haven't seen anything on the PS3 that can't be done on the 360.

sony also knows nintendo's inner workings, they know exactly what games the wii will support and how backward compatible it is - before it was released... sony is so full of **** it's stupid.

With technology, it is expected that if you come out a full year after the competition, you should be technologically more advanced. Doesn't matter when it was "supposed to" come out, what matters is when it DOES come out. When Duke Nukem Forever comes out, are we going to judge it based on Half Life which came out the same year that DNF was supposed to?

I haven't really seen anything except for ads where the media has bought into the hype. Most stuff I see talks about how the games really aren't any better than the 360's.

With technology, it is expected that if you come out a full year after the competition, you should be technologically more advanced. Doesn't matter when it was "supposed to" come out, what matters is when it DOES come out. When Duke Nukem Forever comes out, are we going to judge it based on Half Life which came out the same year that DNF was supposed to?

thats the issue.... sony is not more advanced, they are way late to the game and they have to say that in the articles... and they are not, they just keep saying how much more powerful it is and how much more technically advanced it is... it's an 04 beemer that was just released, call it what it is.

I read a tech report that said the 360 was technically superior to the PS3, and another that said it was going to take a while for the programmers figure out how to best code for the PS3, and when they did, it would out step the 360. I'm sure games for both systems will improve, but I doubt the PS3 will be superior to the 360.

by the time they figure out how to program for it or whatever else and the games start looking superior, M$ will already have it's next console out.
