    Keep getting Window Protection Error

My mom keeps having trouble with her computer and can't get Windows to run.

For a while it went into Windows and then the computer would just restart or the monitor would just go blank and the computer would freeze. Now it will go only past the Windows Startup screen and I get the Windows Protection Error blue screen.

In the past, when the monitor had been unplugged and then plugged back in, the computer would beep and the screen wouldn't show up, other times it wouldn't beep and the screen still didn't show up -All this has happened before and, after restarting a few times, the computer would work. The beep code is Award's code for a video card problem. In addition to this, lately it will sometimes beep very rapidly, nonstop.

I have already tried switching the PSU and RAM to see if that's the problem, and she got a new video card but nothing is working. The power supply is only 250W, but as much as that bugs me, it has ran the computer all this time.

I believe the old video card is an SiS 6326 3D Pro (probably only 4MB card) and was replaced with a GeForce FX 5200 (256 MB card). The motherboard is a MSI K7T PRO2-A. If it matters, the new video card is AGP 8X and the motherboard goes up to AGP 4X (AGP 2.0 -which is okay according to the video card box). I know 8X is suppose to be backward compatible.

I want to also add that I would have the problem of my screen going blank while at the Command prompt after using the Startup Disk.

was the old card a "onboard" or a actully card, some cards are not back compable, most of the 5200, should be but some are not, maybe you just got a bad video card

i am going to it is your motherboard since i had problems with agp that was like yours, i am goning to say , what is the cpu speed if it is a p3, then your motherboard is really deisigned for agp 1.0 = 2x, and some agp 4x cards, also which goes up to agp 4x, means i am taking a guess your motherboard likes agp 2x cards, now if it was a true agp 4x then yes you should not have a problem but i am going to say your motherboard is designed for agp 1.0 =2x, will read some agp 4x cards,

post your cpu then i will can i tell better

The CPU is an AMD Duron 750MHz. The manual only mentions it is "AGP specification compliant and supports AGP 2.0 1x/2x/4x", but not much else.

'there is your problem 1x,2x,4x, supports does not mean it is designed for it you have to beefy of card, supports means you really have a agp 1.0 slot that will read some agp 4x cards not 8x, alos your volt is 3.3 not 1.5 , that can the problem also i had a msi motherboard witha agp 1.0 slot that read 1/2x i had a agp 8x card in it it worked but during games it would freeze, i am going to say your motherboard is not designed for this card, you are either going to have to get a new motherboard or find a used card on ebay

Okay, thanks. There still is the problem of what went wrong before installing the new video card -Most of the problems above happened prior to me installing the new card (except the Windows protection error). I have the same old card as she had in one of my older computers and I will put it in her computer to see if the card went bad.

A lot of people hated Windows ME, which is why it's never been installed on one of my computers (only my moms and she has XP on a different one). The new card never made it to installation, the Add New Hardware function didn't have a chance to come up. Since the problem happened before the new video card, I'm guessing the motherboard might have gone bad.

She will probably get a new motherboard, which will also mean a new CPU but that isn't a bad thing.
