Why is Vista Copy/Delete time and speed so slow?

I was copying stuff on to a usb stick and i took forever on vista, i had xp pro a month ago with the same usb stick and it was so much faster. Vista even deletes really slowly. So I had to delete the contents of the usb stick on my other comp with xp pro. what's up with that?

i noticed that when deleting large files off of my hdd the other day. in xp it was pretty much instant. in vista for 4gig of files i see a status bar (which goes from red to green) for about 7 seconds. doesn't really bother me, just thought it was odd.

except for the fact that when i deleted a folder with many items that totalled 2 GB, it took like 10 minutes to delete it, not just slightly more.

Also, copying to the usb from comp. for my XP comp took 58 seconds.
I tried the same files copying from comp to usb, it took 13 minutes and a half.

It is more than just a minor inconvenience, not to mention that all other processes came to a halt while this was performed.

I know vista requires a bit more from computers, but for copying and deleting?!?

    P.S.
The one that runs Vista and the one with XP are identical comps, so I'm sure its not hardware.

That's definitely not normal behavior. While I've noticed a slight lag, it takes nowhere near 10 minutes to delete 2GB. Maybe your HD? I don't know.

That almost sounds like it isn't seeing the drive as USB 2 and is transferring at 1 speeds. But if the same thing is happening on your hard drive that is really strange. I would run some diagnostics on your hard drive.

Is transferring files the only time you notice slowdowns?

Edit: Also how many files are in the 2gigs is it like 10s of thousands?

i think it has to do with the 2.0 usb speed, it only happens between usb and hardrive, and deleting off the usb, cuz i tried deleting from the hd today and it was fast as normal.

    edit:

Ok, i think i know whats worng but i dont know how to fix it. When i plug in my usb a new message appears saying that its not plugged into a 2.0 speed usb, however, i have a seperate card in the back which was installed with 4 2.0 usb ports and two firewire.

It tells me to click to see where to plug it in, and it says i have 4 unused 20 usb ports, so they should be the card ports, right? So i plugged it in there, and it says the same thing, not to mention other things are plugged in there as well, and the comp says that the 4 2.0 usb are all not in use at the moment. I don't have any other 4 empty usb ports. I have two in the front, which aren't 2.0 for sure, and the card in the back with 2.0. I tried plugging it in directly to the card and through the 2.0 usb hub in the card.

    Any ideas?

the card with 2.0 usb didn't come with a driver installation, could that be something? I also went to device manager to update all usb port drivers, and it says they're all fine.

i seem to have found the problem. the driver that comes with vista or is downloaded is not compatible with vista. I am looking for a compatible one, although many places say there is none yet.

(need vista 32 bit compatible driver for IEEE1394)

ok, i found one, and now it even detects that my usb is plugged in the high speed one (i see if the high speed are occupied by plugging one of the flash disk in the front which is non 2.0)

it even shows my 2.0 hub which is plugged in.

cool. i'll test the copying speeds now.
