    Vista upgrade question

    Hey, im running XP now and my college gave me a free vista upgrade disc. All my programs are installed on a secondary hard drive and i have my OS installation on C:, if i upgrade to vista will my old programs and games still run?

    do you have your own license for it or are you using his? If so, you may have problems.

    If you upgrade they *should* run.

    Most of us here would recommend doing a fresh install, however (which is still possible with an upgrade disk, just a pain in the ***). You wouldn't be able to use your programs (would have to reload everything) but it would prevent countless problems that always occur when doing an OS upgrade.

    If you do decide to do the upgrade, which is for sure the easiest way, you should be fine. Only software incompatible with Vista (likely your antivirus software, for example) won't run. Either way you may have to install Vista drivers for much of your hardware.

    Russell is correct but please look at his specs. Vista has much more overhead and is still in it's infancy of being tweaked.
    I received a licensed version of Vista Business from MS and decided to do a clean install on rig #1 below. As you can see, the specs for rigs #1 & 2 are close in performance. Rig 2 does run a bit faster and Vista has a longer learning curve. If your XP computer is your only one I would not upgrade if it is running well. If you do decide to upgrade, PLEASE back up all of your data, be sure you have all of your program discs and make a chart of all of your settings. If you do not have AT LEAST 1 gig of ram DO NOT upgrade.
    These are my thoughts after having installed Vista fresh. (I originally did an upgrade from XP Pro but found too many problems).

    dont upgrade. what makes u think all ur programs will run with vista? if the system is working fine now, then dont jump on the band wagon with everyone else just because it's new. remember, everytime a new windows is released, their are so many updates, before the os becomes stable.

    Run the MS upgrade advisor to check if your computer is a good candidate for VISTA. If your computer has less than 1.5gigs, then do NOT upgrade to vista. It will not run as smooth.
