Permanent Num Lock, is it possible?
Not sure which forum to start the thread on, but, this seems good enough =)
I would like my num lock to be on permanently. My computer is already set to boot with num lock on, but, I don't want to be able to turn it off by hitting the num lock key. Is this possible?
In cast you're wondering.... I would like to disable it cause I have video game binds to the numpad keys, and turning off num lock screws that up. Occassionally my finger hits the numlock key, and by the time I realize what has happened, it's too late.
Appreciate any responses.
Thanks,
Krater

Hmm. Interesting question. I would assume that this must be possible. At first though, I thought that the num-lock key would be bound somehow in the BIOS, but then I realized that Mac's don't have a num-lock key...yet the "clear" key [which is in place of num-lock] acts as a num-lock in Windows through Boot Camp...so the binding for the key must be in the OS layer.
No idea about how to change it though...but I assume it's possible.

Alright. I've found this:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device...kscan-map.mspx
So, it appears what I want to do it completely doable by editing the registry. But, 1) I think the above link has some typos, 2) I don't know the coding for disabling the num lock key. Lol, would be too nice of MS to have a link of key codes on that page, huh?

Lol.... okay, apparently there are no typos... it all has to do with something called little Endian format.
Who knew turning off a key would be so complicated... gimme a hammer.

That's not a bad idea. You could pry the sucker off and put it somewhere you won't accidentally push it.

numlock??? how about Caps Lock?
numlock is up and out of the way, but the capslock is right by that little pinky finger.
anyway, to answer your question, you can disable/enable any key you want, there is a nifty little proggie that will do this for you, it is called 'hitakey". i couldn't find it with an internet search, but i do have the proggie in my downloaded stuffs.
i can forward it to you.

Google key mapping software. There are lots of free utilities that will allow you to map a key to do whatever you want or nothing at all.

I use this one and it will let you disable it.....
Keytweak is a free keyboard remapper for Windows NT/2000/XP. It makes use of Microsoft's Scancode Map registry key to remap your keyboard. VB6 Runtime files are required, but are already present on Windows 2000/XP.

Thanks for all the replies. After some research I figured out how to manually edit the registry to do it.
That program looks perfect Steve, definately giving it a try.

I'm glad at least one person recommended manually removing the key.
