xf98config?
Is there any real difference between xf98config and xf86config? Also how the heck can you tell if you are useing xfree86 3.x or xfree86 4.x? I know that 4.x uses the directory /usr/X11/ and 3.x uses /usr/X11R6.
Just i have both folders and i can't seem to find it in /var/log like it says on the how too..

Actually my xfree 4.0.3 uses X11 not X11R6. But that is just how I installed it. I forget exactly how to tell which one worked, but I know I put all my 3D accleration stuff in the xconfig-4 file (which is the one for 4.0.x) and 3D works so it must be using the right one:P

I notice that slackware 7.1 seems to load xfree 3.x and xfree 4.x. At least thats how it looks to me is that right? If that is so how do i tell it to use xfree 4. hehe I'm getting tired of crashing my xserver.

xf98config is for computers running the PC98 architecture (mostly in Japan). Use xf86config only, as you are using the i386 architecture
As for Slackware, mine only installed 3.3.6, though 4.x was available on the contribs cd. I only have a 2 disk version, so I'm not sure which disk it is in the 4 disk set. What I did was install SW w/o X at first, then after the install I added the 4.0 package. But, both my 3.3.6 and 4.0 versions installed to /usr/X11R6.
