    General Notebook Question

I know this is somewhat vague, but I recently saw a Wal-Mart commercial for a $300 Acer laptop. Does this offer seem decent? Are Acer laptops a reliable brand? I'm just looking for something to blog with.

You can't expect any of us to tell you if $300 is decent for a laptop without knowing the specifications. The price sounds excellent for a good laptop, but I don't know the specs, so I can't say for sure. I'm assuming though, that it's a very basic model and would be fine for web surfing and word processing. Assuming that's all you need it for, go for it.

To be honest the only laptop brands i spend my money on are toshiba or lenevo. Maybe another like sony for example if i heard good enough reviews ....

yeah... chances are they skim out on the processor (using either Sempron or Celeron processors) with 512 MB or less memory. If all you plan on doing with it is some word processing and Internet, it's fine.

Performance isn't really that important to be honest. Just ensure that it has 512MB RAM (1GB if it's with Vista) and everything else doesn't matter. Also a gigabyte of notebook RAM is like $30-40 these days so even that shouldn't be a problem.

Here's what you should be looking at:
    - How big & heavy is it?
    - How long does the battery run? (with wifi on and decent screen brightness)
    - How well is it constructed?

Acer makes laptops that are terrible in all 3 categories and laptops that are great in all 3 categories.

IMHO battery charge life and weight are very important. I've been lugging 7 pounds around for 4 or 5 years now and it will only go about 45min on a charge.

Next one I get will be light and have the ability to hold 2 batteries.

You get what you pay for.

If a laptop costs $300 retail, then expect it to act, behave, and perform like a $300 laptop.
