OS for new build
Hi there, im trying to decide on an os for a a new pc build.
It's for the upcoming update of Project Entopia which is based on the cryteck2 game engine.
My current pc is running w2k, and im not sure which of xp, vista 32bit, vista 64bit, would be most suitable.
I dont even know how much memory is required to run the vista os.
I have heard some people saying vista is the new win98 and its useless, if this is true, when is the next os to follow vista due to arrive?

The next windows version after vista is touted as windows 7. however they could change its name like the vista/longhorn palava .... Its not due for a couple of years at least, however with vista being compared to winME it could be sooner ....
I would suggest winXP. Your going to suffer less compatibility problems as well as more performance for your hardware .... Ots supposed to be supported with updates till 2014 and its still one of the best windows versions, maybe win2k aside ......

i have to agree with wh666. while i have used (and currently run) Vista since beta and have never had one issue it just doesn't offer anything to the normal user experience.

Ok, so there is no point waiting for the next os.
I'm not sure compatibiltiy will be an issue, this will be a basic box, E8400, 8800gts, one hard drive, onboard sound, dvd rom player. Nothing else.
Is it true that Vista is required to run directx 10?
Maybe i should stick with w2k, is it still possible to get all the udates for it, if I use it on the new PC?

Yes you need Vista for DirectX 10, but there aren't many games that only use DX10. I'm not really up to date hardware wise but I think if you wait just a bit you should find something more performing for the same price than a 8800gts.
I use XP and don't plan to move to Vista any time soon. Never had experience with Win2k.

windows 7 is expected sometime in 2010, but you'd probably want to wait a year or something for all the initial problems to be fixed etc.

I would stick to XP. Games still run better in XP than Vista. Vista is also a system hog. Vista 64 bit probably need more than 2Gb But 2Gb should be just fine to play games.
Just want to point out. Win98 is actually very good Compared to Win32 and for sure it wasn't useless. Near the end product cycle for Win98 the software was stable and streamlined (it can never be stable compared to XP)
XP(based on win2k)was another big step forward compared to 98 Just like 98 to 32.
Vista is like WinMe. Don't know if you remember WinMe.
Ok overexaggerated a little bit there but Vista is based on XP but just more beefy and got a big cosmetic make over and from my experience a lot of the chipset drivers are not great or as stable compared to the XP versions for MB especially.
I am currently building a machine for a friend and I have been pondering which OS to install for him (He doesn't even know how to e-mail) and after final thought I've decided to put WinXP for him. Maybe in a year time I will upgrade his OS to Vista.
