I don't roll on Shabbos!
Table Top Gaming
Okay so summer officially started for me today after I just finished my 7:50am exam . I told myself during christmas when I wanted to start getting into Warhammer 40k miniatures that if I just wait until summer and I still wanted to do it then I would let my self buy a few sets. I thought I would get over it and go on to something else but nope, 5 months later and I still want to get into it so I guess that is enough wait time.
I don't really know where to start though. I have a huge Hive Lord that my brother bought me at christmas and I also have some assorted space marine from when I was younger so I am pretty much starting fresh. I downloaded the rulebook and a few codices from the internet but am planning on picking up a rulebook.
I'm thinking I like the tyranids but the Imperial Guard are sweet as well (I love the heavy equipment.) I noticed they offer a starter pack called Assault on Black Reach that comes with the rulebook, templates, dice, and starter sets of both ork and space marines for only 60 dollars. I was thinking that might be the best way to get into it and also have another team for friends/family instead of having to try to hook up with strangers at first.
Anyone else play? What did you start with and can anyone offer any help in the army point system? How much am I looking at spend to get like a 500-1000 point army together? Any general advice would be appreciated too!
Thanks guys

Grouchy Tech
I play a TON of 40k in fact tonight im going to play in a 16k per side war....lol
http://www.mi40k.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=95&start=30
if you have any questions hit the link in my sig we have people who play every army.
Myself I play Space Marines and Sisters of Battle...mostly Sisters of Battle. The black reach kit is a awesome value if you are interested in orcs or SM..
i'd tell you to keep your eye on craigslist because there are sometimes awsome deals..especially on nids.
Nids are somewhat broken right now (rules are older) but still very competative..
The guard is the new hotness as their codex was just redone..and my god did they get some awsome options...flying transports, tank squadrons just tons of awesome stuff.
I'd also suggest you try to find a local hobby shop that plays 40k..as they will usually let you test out armies to see what you like.

I don't roll on Shabbos!
Just got back from my local hobby shop empty handed. The guy told me the best thing to do is to read the entire rulebook first before purchasing anything. Get a feel for the game and not to go in blindly.
I will work on reading through the entire thing (like 300+ pages) before spending any money I guess.

"Watches You Sleep" Shark
Speaking of which I'm having my first D&D game this sunday, I have to go pick up a hard copy og the Keep on Shadow fell.
If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

Awesome.
WH40k always seemed really interesting to me, but I could never muster up the desire to spend the money required to play. On the topic of other games though, I'm actually hanging out with friends tonight to rock some Agricola!

I saw some guys playing playing on a giant board game in a mall store that sells warhammer dolls. They were rolling dice and saying things like, "oh you really got me good that time". I thought they were a bunch of wierdos.

Creepy Shark
Board games, eh? Sounds like a good idea. Maybe my son and I will play some Torpedo Battleship tonight.

Into the Wasteland
My problem always was I enjoyed P&P games and Tabletop (used to do Battletech tabletop in the 80s) but after 18 y/o I never could get along with the people that would group up and play at hobby shops and stuff...way too artsy a crowd for me.

I collect and paint 40k but dont play at all. I have a fairly sizable Daemonhunters army with Grey Knights, GK Terminators, a couple Inquisitors and Brother-Captain Stern. Im not done painting the Terminators yet but once I am Ill be picking up either another set of Grey Knights or a Dreadnaught.
I find the painting to be very rewarding as I like getting all the real fine detail down. Ive seen some armies where people just slap em with some crap paint and call it done. I like to display my little army and really see the detail on each model.
Ive kinda wanted to head down to the hobby store and play with the guys down there but I just done have the time. Im pretty happy with just the painting.

Apu, that is how I am too. I have painted various models since I was really young. Not much is more rewarding than spending hours painting individual pieces and then putting it all together and it turning out awesome. I have the double whammy going on here. I think the actual game is very intriguing and I love to paint models... I'm hopeless.
BTW while I was in the store I over heard a 40 year old fat balding guy talking to his nerd friend about Imperial Guard tactics and I was like man I don't want to be like that when I am 40. I will probably get the Black Reach set to play with friends and family and see if I want to get into it deeper. The problem is like what other people have said most of the people that play these games are not normal. It would be hard to find a good group of guys that aren't wierdos.

Yea Ive looked at the black reach set before and for $60 theres no better way to get a nice army going. You get like 50 guys, a dreadnaught, rules book, templates/measuring sticks etc so you can play. The only downside is that its SM vs Orks, so if you dont wanna collect/play either of those youre SOL. I wanted something a bit more interesting so I just bought the box sets of Daemonhunters.
I wouldnt really listen to the hobby shop guy in regards to basing your army choice on the rulebook tho. I would pick an army based on what you would enjoy painting and playing. Fanatical religious supersoldiers? Bug swarms? Green spore creatures with low technology or space elves? I picked the Grey Knights because I like the Space Marines but really liked the secretive order of Daemonhunters who have sweet armor and kill daemons with psychically charged halberds. Dont pick an army because they get a +1 to armor or some crap like that. Pick what you think is cool.
Oh and the Grey Knights were totally my favorite units in DoW. Attach the Chaplain to a squad and go bust some heads. Good times.

I always enjoyed Chaos. Those models might scare people though lol.
Mainly I just want a set that I can play with my friends and brother to try to get them into it and the Black Reach looks like the best way to do that. I wish they offered more starter sets for cheap like that one...

Yea if you wanna get another person into the game Black Reach is the way to go. You can just say "Heres an army, lets play".
Of course you could buy a squad of Chaos too and paint that on the side and slowly build up that army as you try to get friends into the game.
