Win 7 Prem $30 for college students

btw: Can I do a clean/fresh install from that ISO and use my upgrade key? that's waht I really want to do.

seems like a PITA to have to install xp first then do the upgrade.

burn the iso to disc and boot from the hard drive. At least thats what I'm assuming.

it's not pirating since it still requires a key.

The Upgrade version of Windows 7 does require a pre-existing VALIDATED installation of Windows XP or Vista. This means that you first need to install XP or Vista, validate it online, and THEN install Windows 7. You CANNOT simply "insert a CD" of a previous copy of Windows. This was available in Windows XP upgrades, but NOT in Windows 7. You CANNOT simply choose to "enter a Product Key at a later date." This was available in Vista, but NOT in Windows 7.

So again, the ONLY way to use the Windows 7 Upgrade is to have a pre-existing and VALIDATED installation of Windows XP or Vista. Yes, you need to go through the install process for two OS'es (first Win XP/Vista, then Win7). Yes, this is a colossal pain in the arse. No, there is no way around it.

If you are upgrading from XP, your only option after the installer detects your validated XP install is to wipe out XP, and do a clean-install. If you are upgrading from Vista, your options are to do either an in-place upgrade, or a clean-install where all of your data gets wiped out.

Once you upgrade, your old XP / Vista product key will be DEACTIVATED. So do not use any XP or Vista product key that you plan on using again. The product key will be rejected when you attempt to authorize online.

Technically, this is incorrect. Giving someone a copy still counts as making and distributing an unauthorized copy, even if it still requires a product key. Most software companies won't go after you, since you did buy a legitimate copy and are only using your legitimate copy. But in the eyes of the law, this is *NOT* legal.

The digital river download is a full installation. I am installing it now on a blank drive.
Edit: Well maybe not! It won't accept the key..I have read if you leave it blank and reinstall from the DVD after Windows is running, it'll work. I'm going to try that..

I was able to install my digital copy of Win 7 Pro upgrade version with out having to install Xp or Vista.

I did it from Win7 RC and it required a custom clean install.

The article you quote is also 3 months old. UA has posted recent articles regarding win7 upgrade installs that verify you do not need to have a copy of XP or vista installed before hand. If my copy is any indication, it didn;t even ask for proof of any kind.

Hey guys this is how I did it:

1. From within XP 32-bit, I downloaded the 64-bit version of Win7 Professional upgrade.
2. Used the installer to extract the files, but the error.
3. Checked the file size of the folder "extendedSetup" and noticed that it was 3.01 GB.
4. Moved extendedSetup folder to root (C:\)
5. Downloaded this file and placed it into C:\WINDOWS\System32: http://www.sevenforums.com/attachmen...-l-oscdimg.zip
6. Bought up command prompt and typed the following: oscdimg -bC:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -1WIN_EN_DVD C:\expandedSetup\ C:\7.iso
7. Burned ISO with Nero
8. Booted, installed, and activated

To make it bootable you have to put that file in your directory. This worked like a charm. You can also use a bootable flash drive.

It did a FULL CLEAN install and accepted my key no problems.

Oh and if you don't have enough room on the C drive like me, then you can change the last portion of the code from C:\7.iso to anything you want. For instance: M:\7.iso. That part just tells where to output the file.

I just burned the extracted files to dvd, and no go
