    System Died - I'm Stumped

    I was using my 3 year old system today and started to notice some minor graphical issues on the game I was playing. After a bit, the system just cut out. It starts to boot up but never posts and shuts off, cycling indefinitely. The power supply and video card don't appear to be the issue as they test on another system fine. I don't have any memory/CPU or motherboard that I can swap. Any ideas what I should try? Honestly, the first time I have seen this one.

    I'm not an expert here. I'm usually the one asking for advice. I had a similar problem happen to me about a year ago. My memory sticks apparently 'died'. I came to finally find out that a power surge in my house caused the mem sticks to 'short' out. I drove myself crazy checking all the different components and even reformatted my HD. After figuring out the problem, I purchased a backup power system with AVR and I've been good ever since.

    If you have multiple memory sticks in the system try pulling just one and see how it works then. That could help you isolate the bad module.

    The overheating possibility is one to check out too. Go to some place like NewEgg and get a good high-capacity case cooling fan. This will extend the life of the whole system and especially the precious HDDs.
