Ditching my iPhone and going T-Mobile + Android

Actually T-mobile has the best coverage in my area.

At home:
T-mobile = 5 bars
AT&T = 1 bar
Verizon = 0 bar (my next door neighbor has to go outside)

I don't know if you have the same brand phone for all those carriers, but I've always had the best luck with Nokia.

If I'm going to pay for shitty coverage, at least I can pay $60/mo instead of $110/mo.

Nokia phones are usually the best for signal strength on all networks... but their phones are usually pretty weak overall. Sure, everyone talks about some mystical overseas Nokia but in the States they are just mediocre.

Although if I wanted a phone that did absolutely nothing except make calls a Nokia would be my first choice.

Sounds like you found a good deal Nihilist. I fooled around with a Droid yesterday in a VZW store... hasn't quite hit the street (yet?) but an employee had a demo phone on him and let me fool around with it. I don't really know what to think of it since I didn't have that much time to fool around with it but it looked really sharp and the guy had about a billion apps on there. Enjoy!

Hope your service works w/ TMobile though... not the best in terms of coverage in my area (Indiana) hope its better for you!

hero or droid is my next phone.. currently have an iphone 2g

The Startac was my first cell phone, and while it was nice for the time I can guarantee that the Razr was the best phone I ever owned. It was everything the Startac was and more.

Motorola seems to strike gold every few years. First the Startac, than the Razr, now the Droid (maybe). And when their phones are good they are VERY good. So I have high hopes for the Droid.

The problem I've noticed with all Android phones up until this point is the lack of storage space. Apparently even the Droid only has 256MB for application storage. Apps are starting to get larger. There are a few games on the iPhone that are over the 256MB limit themselves. Any application with a local database, like a dictionary app, also takes up quite a bit of space.

I appreciate the SD slot for expandable memory, but it would be nice to see an Android phone that comes with 8GB built in.

My Moto has a microSD slot. They work well and can be backed up easily.
IIRC there are 32GB ultraSD cards available.

*edit* The Droid comes with a 16GB microSD card.

That memory can't be used for app storage on the Android platform though, that's the problem. Only file, music, etc.

I ditched my iPhone 3G today, and got myself a Droid from Verizon Wireless. The primary reason for my switch was because the AT&T network totally sucks. I am on my phone all day for work, and it is totally unacceptable to drop 2-3 calls per hour when talking to clients.

I got the Droid - it's a very slick phone. Coming from an iPhone world, I can tell that the user experience isn't as "polished" and "branded" as the world Apple wants you to live in. But I will readily give that up, if it means I can use an open platform phone running on a solid cellular network.

Oh, and the screen on the Droid is absolutely insanely nice.

Are you serious? Even Windows Mobile lets you store apps on a storage card. I'm not gonna buy a product with <1GB app storage capabilities, that's ridiculous. 1GB would be fine though.
