Exclamation OSX 10.6.2 removes Atom support!

Kind of big news if you're a hackintosh netbook user like me. I'm stuck on 10.6.1 for the time being. Pretty ghetto decision by Apple since I can't see which one of their markets is getting hurt by hackintosh netbooks. The only thing even similar is the Macbook Air and it's a totally different class of machine.

Apple is hardly a consumer-friendly company though, so it's not hard to believe.

Hmmm looks like windows supports atom.

Yeah that sucks I'm sure apple was a little peeved at people not buying their 1500 dollar air and getting 300 dollar Asuses instead.

Anybody that would buy a netbook over a Macbook Air is a bit of a tool if they were trying to get a fully functioning computer.

It's like somebody deciding on a new car and then buying a moped. They aren't even in the same class. I'd be surprised if that's why Apple would make this decision.

Edit: sorry, looks like I'll eat my words. Did a quick check to make sure things didn't do a swing back in the wrong direction and... of course they did. Viva con Apple, eh? Didn't realize they made the official release. The report I just saw is throwing in the word "unintentional" but that's hard to believe when they added support back in for the dev builds once it became public news and slipped it right back out in time for release. Typical :\

Turns out it isn't true. That news spread like wildfire a few days back on the twitterverse but build testing has shown it to be false for the latest builds. Speculation of course says it's the acidic reaction across the net that caused them to put it back into dev builds. Wouldn't be surprised given Apple's constrictor grip on anything they consider theirs but either way, atom support is safe for now.

... and yet I don't have enough fingers to count the number of busted rides I've seen with soundsystems worth way more than the car There's one in every crowd and there sure seem to be a lot of crowds.

    Then what is their reason?

I would buy a netbook over a crappy Airbook =)

However, you are complaining about Apple because they removed support for something they do not sell anyway... Interesting.

That is like complaining to Ford because the part does not work in a Honda.

I haven't seen anyone in here "complaining". I gave people a heads up.

Your first post was complaining. Pretty ghetto decision by Apple. I think it is a fine decision. They wont be using Atom processors in their product line, no reason to have support for it.

That's not exactly complaining chief. I think it's a poor decision regardless of whether I have an Atom or not. Or do you take EVERY critical statement as a complaint?

I'm an Apple shareholder, are you? If not then your opinion is meaningless. Going out of your way to hurt a market that isn't threatening you is a poor business decision.

And how do you know what they will or won't be supporting? They can add and remove support on a build by build basis, as seen by certain builds pre-10.6.2.

Anyone using OSX on anything other than a certified Mac is potentially hurting their sales. If they don't want to make their OS open to any hardware then they need to lock it down good like they did in this version. Someone that wants a smaller computer only has 1000 dollar options from Mac, the Air and a low end MacBook. A netbook will do most anything anyone wants in a computer except play games (which a Mac user would not want to do anyway.) Since the MacBook and the Air is the smallest laptop Apple makes they get directly compared to anything in their size range and smaller.

IMO it is pretty obvious they think the netbooks are potentially hindering sales if they went through the trouble of disabling Atom. I can't think of any other reason to why they would disable support.

LOL... Even if you are a shareholder your opinion is meaningless too! So do not give me that crap unless you are a majority shareholder or on the board.

    What a load of crock!

Yes they can add or remove at will, and yes your first post was you complaining about it. It didnt say you were rioting over it. A person saying they hate our current president is complaining without stating anything more.

Anyone who owns a share of a company has a meaningful opinion. Unfortunate that you don't think your opinion is worth anything even if you're a partial owner. That's not really the best way to go about investing your money if you're just gonna give it to someone and not have an interest in what they do with it.

I think they find it as more of a threat to the iPod Touch more than anything. It's also likely they are going to be coming out with a netbook of their own sometime in the near future and they want to clear the market before their own overpriced model is released. They may release a 10" _real_ notebook for $700 perhaps, similar to Sony. Something using one of the ULV Core processors.

I don't see netbooks as a viable threat to any computer in their current lineup.

Eh, sales, potential sales, all in the same category. Apple feels that netbooks are hindering their future profits so bam there is the update. I still feel people cross shop the 13" macbook with a netbook, if anything because apple does not offer anything smaller.

Do you have any idea how few people put OSX on a netbook? Or even have an understanding how to do it? Or how relatively difficult it is unless you have a very specific netbook?

Who are all these Mac purchasers who you think are looking at a $1200 machine and saying "no, you know what, I want a netbook that's probably not OSX compatible but I want to mickey mouse a way to get it on there so I can use a limited in usefulness machine"?

Most Mac buyers aren't particularly computer savvy to begin with and yet you think they are seriously cross shopping a netbook hackintosh? Crazy...

So you disagree with yourself lol? I think you read my posts and then automatically take the opposite view no matter what.
