    Anything wrong with this card?

    Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 Vapor-X 2GB GDDR5 / PCIe 2.0 / VGA / DVI / HDMI

Last year it was hot hot hot, I think my brother bought one for close to $600 canadian. But now it's on sale for $260 Thinking of grabbing it but I want to make sure this isn't some kind of false advertising scam like it has a weaker something or other.. I'm not sure what Vapor-X means either. You know how they like to repackage these things with lower clock ..

and to be sure, this would be quite an upgrade from a 8800gts that I have now?

Well I found out what the small print was... It's a single core, not a duel core video card. I thought the X2 meant 2 gigs of memory but it means 2 video cards in one, that's what my brother bought and that card is still Just under $500.

So I bought the 4870 with 2 gigs of memory anyway. But I'm not thrilled about the purchase. Almost canceled right there at the till.

I wonder how much difference I will see over my 8800GTS 512mb.. I got a core duo E8400, 2x1 gig OCZ 1064mhrz ram, Striker II mobo

Well. the 4870 is about the performance level of the GTX260 216core, which in turn is more powerful than the 8800GTS. So, you can expect some performance boost in games (IF CPU's not the bottleneck).

I thought the 8800gts was the bottle neck. I did install the 4870 with 2 gigs of memory and I did a test with Borderlands. I made a fraps movie with the 8800gts and then again with the 4870 and the frames were exactly the same.. 60 frames a sec. I made the fraps movies at the same point also, at the start of the game when the dune buggys jump over the cliff into the yard and the little robot opens the gate for you.

So I figure maybe that game is too easy for both cards so I'm going to try crysis warhead next. With the 8800gts I had to use a mod to play the game. I'll see what it's like with this new card. I'm not impressed so far though.

If both games were showing 60 FPS, it was because you had VSync on. Some games are still fairly reliant on the CPU, especially where the game has lots of AI or physics to contend with.

As for the video card, I went from an 8800GTS to a 4850 to a 4890, and I could see performance improvements with each upgrade.

I feel dumb for buying this video card, I should have waited till spring. I haven't had any problems with games except for crysis and, even worse, warhead.
