I think it'll sell a great amount, just like the iPod and iPhone. It's a cheap Apple product, it's trendy, it appeals to a wide variety of people.
I note from your list of failures that's there's nothing from the 2000s on there except the Cube, which unlike the rest of your list isn't much of a "failure". It was enormously popular, just had some design issues which kept people from purchasing it to the levels at which they purchase other Apple products. But it's nowhere near the same realm as the Pippin or 20th Anniversary Mac. The dotcom I worked for in those days had around 40 G4 Cubes in the art department.
There isn't much failure coming out of Apple in the Steve Jobs era, and I don't see the iPad changing that. The guy is a marketing genius.
