Unlikely. It will add to the sales of the iPod/iPhone platform.
They'll sell like hotcakes, and if the iPhone OS ever gets multitasking, it will become a mainstream tool.
I think the real problem with the iPhone platform is that it's been much more successful then even Apple anticipated. It started as a mobile phone OS, and now it's turning into something very different. Had they been able to foresee it being this popular I think they would have put more forethought into application development.

I feel sorry for anyone buying an iPad in place of a Kindle. eInk is the only screen Id want to read for any extended period of time.
My armor is Contempt
My shield is Disgust
My sword is Hatred

I won't be buying one...
to me it's too big to be a phone/gaming device
and if I want to run programs and appliccations I would op for a netbook or laptop.
not to mention
1- I will be tied down to the apple store for their stuff.
2- no user replacable battery,
3- no usb port
4- more expensive that a netbook
that is just me.. but if other don't mind bending over and pulling their pants down for apple that's their business

I don't roll on Shabbos!
I think it will sell pretty fast at first and then people will realize there is nothing you can use it for. School kids will buy it instead of a laptop and then fumble around with the touch keyboard cursing under their breath. Disgruntled kindle buyers will purchase it and realize the screen sucks for reading.
IMO it is a romantic idea brought forth by the likes of mid century scifi writers but in reality a slate type computer interface is not the most efficient way for us to input. I feel that to be able to type efficiently I need to be able to use tactile feelings to keep me on track.

I don't necessarily agree with that. For me, the real problem is the OS. I think a $500 device with the functionality of the PADD from Star Trek is a great idea.
The OS just isn't there yet. There are rumors that iPhone OS 4.0 will be a complete overhaul, and likely not compatible with earlier generation iPhones.

So you agree that the iPad as it is now is a product that you think will fail.

No. It will fail with the tech crowd. For the mainstream, it's a toy and as a toy it seems pretty fun and worth $500. Surf the internet, watch a movie, play a game, etc.
It's well priced. It be hard for it to fail. Most of Apple's failures are a result of their high price.

I think it'll sell a great amount, just like the iPod and iPhone. It's a cheap Apple product, it's trendy, it appeals to a wide variety of people.
I note from your list of failures that's there's nothing from the 2000s on there except the Cube, which unlike the rest of your list isn't much of a "failure". It was enormously popular, just had some design issues which kept people from purchasing it to the levels at which they purchase other Apple products. But it's nowhere near the same realm as the Pippin or 20th Anniversary Mac. The dotcom I worked for in those days had around 40 G4 Cubes in the art department.
There isn't much failure coming out of Apple in the Steve Jobs era, and I don't see the iPad changing that. The guy is a marketing genius.
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the conditions that surround him... The unreasonable man adapts surrounding conditions to himself... All progress depends on the unreasonable man."

Apple pulled the G4 Cube from the market in less than 2 years.
Approximately 150,000 units were sold.
I don't call that a success compared to other Apple computers available during that time.

This thing will sell, no doubt about it. I don't think it will sell as well as the iPod or the iPhone thought. It's still the best slate type device out there, probably will be for sometime.
What kills it for me is the lack of a widescreen panel, no multitasking, no SD card slot or USB port(s). It needs to be a little more than a big ***, 4:3 iPod Touch with an optional $170 3G chip. Maybe I'll end up with the third or fourth version.

They will sell 150,000 units in the first hour they are on sale. Easily.

I can see a 1440x960ish model in the near future when they can get that kind of pixel density, at the right price, in a 10" display.

My bet is that the announced iPad model will be a failure and a second generation version will be announced before the end of the year.
