    Post sharky XP impressions

finally after backing up my important stuff from my win2k partition last week, i started to format and install xp. i booted from the cd and it installed flawlessly and faster than any microsoft os i have used before. it was probably 30 minutes between formatting and the time i had xp running (this is on my 2gb windows partition).

i installed a few programs and video card drivers without even having to reboot. the new video drivers installed right away and took effect immediately. i then ran all of my games from my other partition and benched them. max payne, counterstrike and quake 3 all run marginally faster while my 3dmark2k1 score is a little less. i did all this w/out having rebooted once since i ran xp for the first time after installing it.

finally 1 day late ri installed xplogonui which required me to reboot. xp also booted fasterthan any microsoft os i had ever used. it was probably something like 20 seconds from when i turn on my comp.

all i can say is wow, MS has really outdone themselves. i have now been running xp for 3 days having rebooted only once since i installed it. i like the sleeker, more customizable UI and all of my hardware and software has run without a hitch. XP has been a dream for me (so far) and i'm wondering what you guys think about it..

Agreed it is very good. But the fast boot is deceptive. Try doing something big right away and you'll think its frozen. For example as soon as the GUI loads try to start System restore. I'll bet it takes at least 60 seconds to start. After that its fine though. Seems the OS loads basic stuff quickly to get you rolling while other proggies load after the fact. I really like this XP PRo though. Very snappy and stable and so far just about all my software likes it just fine. Only gripe I've had is my Q3 is too dark but that could be an nVidia 22.50 driver issue too. I'm running dual boot with Win 98 but since I got XP I haven't run 98 at all.

XP seems to run pretty well for a vanilla version(no real patches yet). I've had some issues with explorer completely crashing, but I've gotten the same thing on Win2K for a long time so I can't really complain. XP does run some stuff I couldn't get to run under Win2K, and it does boot faster. I haven't had any trouble with opening stuff right after a boot, but that may just be because I haven't tried to duplicate the error. As for Q3 being too dark, that's a problem with all NT based OSs. Try adding the line "ignorehwgamma 1"(I'm pretty sure that's right) to your config, that fixed it under Win2K.

Thanks I'll try that Q3 command. I didn't realize it was a NT issue of sorts. I found I had the 60 Hz refresh problem in XP same as occurs with W2k apparently on my GTS card but the refresh rate fix has everything at optimum now. Worth the effort for any nVidia owner to be sure.

I've had it up and running for a week now, and the more I use it the more I like it. I have still crashed some programs by playing with them, but I have been able to back out of them every time without crashing the oc.

i was doubtful of XP being significantly better than win2k. but after making the switch over half a week ago, i have to say i am totally converted. XP does run faster and it seems to use ram more effectively, actually use the stuff if you have lots of it. the game support is great. i haven't had one game not work for me in XP yet, unlike win2k.

oops, just noticed, need to change my sig

I had tried a beta before and wasn't impressed as I am with the final. Although some stuff was annoying and kinda "newbieized" atleast you can work around it. I have crashed it a few times so I can't say I havn't crashed it but it's definitely better then 2k. I am actually impressed, microsoft did a good job have to give them some credit

Old habbits don't die so quickly. I find it strange when I don't have to restart and things just work. It is wonderful. I had a problem when I first installed Winxp because with win2k I had to install raid drivers and so natruually I did the same with winxp. Doesn't work it will just freeze. The best thing about winxp is not to do anything to it at all just let it run by itself. I was so surprised that it had everything after installed. I didn't have to install anything besides sound card drivers. Everything else was automated. It even had my monitor drivers and newer than the ones I am able to find. Overall I believe and I feel this is the best os MS ever created. Just need to tweak it now and waiting for better xp drivers to come from video card and sound card.

I am impressed with XP. It was less bother to install than previous Windows. Especially to get fully up and running. Windows 95 and 98 came up in 640 by 480, 16 colors. I needed to install modem drivers and find and download video drivers from the Internet, this was inconvenient because the text on some sites is not easy to read in 16 colors. Windows XP came up in 800 by 600 high color, with the modem driver already installed. XP also installed a printer driver as soon as I turned on my printer. Windows ME had detected my printer (an Epson Stylus color 500) and installed a driver for it, but only if I had the printer turned on while I installed ME, and ME’s driver didn’t work good. I hade to uninstall it and install a downloaded one. XP’s driver worked fine.
