Installing device driver software but IM NOT

    Hello.

I just powered on my laptop this morning with vista home, with the latest service pack and all the updates.

I tun it on, ok, and i check my mail. About 10 min later, Installing device driver software pops up by my tray icons. And then it disappears like nothing happened. I was NOT installing ANYTHING. Bout to do to some scanning. What else could it be other then malware?

It could be a usb device or a device that was never installed correctly .... It wont be malware ...

What device driver was being installed?
What entries are in the system event log?
What programs are set to automatically check for updates?

ua549, thank you for your help.

I went looking around the event viewer. I used the filter current log feature to try and find what I was looking for.

Took about 15 min to find this. About the same time the pop-up in the system tray came up telling me it was installing device driver software, for the CD-ROM drive.

Well, here is what the general tab says what happened:

The device 'Optiarc DVD RW AD-7563A ATA Device' (IDE\CdRomOptiarc_DVD_RW_AD-7563A_________________WX05____\5&1fd13f4c&0&0.0.0) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

Why would it do that? I take it thats why the system automatically reinstalled the device driver for my cdrom drive. I dont get it.

I really dont remember what programs I have set to auto update. I know not many, if any. I always manually update by barrage of anti spyware and antivirus software. Is there a tool I can use to check what auto updates without me manually checking everything?

Thank you so much. I hope you can make something out of this better then I can.

You can forget about the automatic updates because the CD is the device in question.
The CD drive is a removable device. When it goes offline and then reappears, the OS will install a driver for it.
Make sure the device connection is clean and secure. Typically there is a retention latch for the drive.

So really nothing to worry about then. Nice.

The drive in my laptop, I dont know how to check to make sure the connections are solid. Its not like a desktop where I can just take the side cover off and check it out.

You said something bout a latch? On the external of laptop?

What brand and model laptop do you have? Every one is different.
On my HP the latch is on the bottom of the box inder the DVD drive.
On my Dell, it is on the side next to the DVD drive.

Its a gate. I think I found the "latch". There is a very small screw underneath the drive near the side of laptop. I think I unscrew that and itll slide out....??

    Well, thanks man. Good day.
