I love IPS and PVA panels too. However, IPS panels for a Gamer are problematic due to input lag and the response times are a bit high.
If the OP is a diehard Gamer, then check out this monitor, 2ms response time:
SAMSUNG XL2370-1

Yeah I just bought this, but Dell says they won't ship till like July 7th or something. I've also read that you can do 75hz like you can with the 2209WA
If you want the best gaming monitor I'd probably pick up a 120hz monitor. Even though they're marketed for 3d, it seems to significantly improve 2d performance. Some of them have some input lag, so do some research.

gaming monitor as in for a computer where you will always be gaming directly infront of it? if so I'd recommend the 28" hanns g
but it is a very polarizing monitor where you either LOVE it or HATE it

I don't have a good recommendation, however I will suggest staying away from ASUS. I bought a decently reviewed model from Newegg, and within 6 months the buttons all broke so it is now a pain in the *** to adjust the settings. Turns out to be a common problem with the particular model I bought.
Not to say all ASUS monitors are going to be bad, just throwing that out there. This was an ~$220 monitor at that time, which was approx. 1 1/2 - 2 years ago.

I think 28 might be too big for me. I dunno. They also look out of myprice range. I like that Samsung Os-Wiz pointed to. I was considering a Dell IPS for 300 but I wanted to see some reviews first.
Keep the suggestions coming!

Yeah having used a TN panel for all these years, I'm not really sure if I'll notice anything when going to a slower panel. I do see a noticeable difference when I play my 360 on my monitor as opposed to my TV, but I'm hoping the difference won't be too great here.

They're certainly cheap.
I buy these things by the dozen, literally. The I-Inc version can be had for $279 on Tiger.

My current monitor has a 12ms response rate and it has never bothered me.

Great White Shark
don't listen to some of these people
I tried a 2ms and 5ms response time monitor side by side in clone mode and it's a very noticable difference in how smooth fps gaming runs (or at least how smooth montion looks on the monitor)
If you play FPS (or more hardcore than casual) or games that really depends on smoothness you have to go with TN.
but pretty much 3D game from racing to RTS and FPS I tried on both TN and IPS monitor it is noticablly smoother on the TN monitor.
I'm a FPS fan myself and would not give up my 2ms BenQ GD2400W 24" monitor
outside of gaming there are the obivous downside of TN vs IPS panels but you probably know what they are anyway
