    Dragon Quest 9

Anyone else playing DQ 9 for the DS? I find the game fun as I do enjoy a good dungeon crawler. It has the old NES feel and sound effects.

I am only a level 20. But still crawling around! Share your stories? Experience?

I'm still trying to finish up Dragon Quest 8 for PS2. I'll probably jump into that in the holidays.

I'm 2-3 hours into it. Great little game with a lot of variety. My only complaint so far is that your party members add nothing to the story since you "build" them yourself and can change them at will. However this is really a very minor issue since the story itself is very solid and introduces the player to a wide array of wacky and interesting characters.

As it stands, my main is following a sword specialization. My other 3 are a thief trained in claws, magician trained in stave's/wands, and a cleric trained in spears. I'm not sure if its possible to max out in more then one area though. I hope so.

I never really got into any Dragon Quest game but I do intend on checking this one out once I'm done with Persona 3 Portable.

What I want to do is change my vocation and stack up on points, then vocation back to my other class. I believe if you never spent those points, you can then use them in the other class... So it is a great way to make out your character faster.

I loved Dragon Quest I, II, and III back on Gameboy Color - this game and its predecessors is one of the main pushes for me to get a DS. It sounds pretty fun.

Depends on what you want to switch into. Skills and skill points carry. That said, some skill trees over lap. For example, Monk and Thief both have the claw tree.

Stats and spells do not carry.

I am curious to know if you can reset sill trees. If I do 30+ points in swords but find I'm not liking it, can i respec? I believe you can't but confirmation would be nice.

No the spells do not carry over.. What I meant was... Grind as the other 10 or so classes and that will give you x amount of spare stat points. Swap back to the class you want to use or have been using and dump those points into that tree...

For example, I want to stay a warrior, swap to any and all the other classes. Gain status points. Dump into Sword and the other stats. Now when I swap back I would be even stronger

I'm not sure I understand you right, but I'm pretty sure you don't gain extra skill points when switching classes and that skill points are based off your character level.

So for example, a level 10 toon that has only been a mage will have the same number of skill points as a level 10 toon that has switched between multiple classes.

Stat points are also different from skill points. Stat points are applied to your character properties like speed, strength and etc. IIRC, Stat points do not carry over. When a class change is made, you lose the stat points of your previous class and gain the stat points of your new class.

I'm pretty sure this is how it works. I believe this was done to fix some skill/stat point abusing that happened in DD8.

Yes it is possible. For example...

I grinded my character to level 20. I vocation to a warrior. Now I am level 1. I level up to lets say 10. (easy to do) I get points to spend as I level. Either save them or use in my class specific ability. Vocation back to my other class and now I have more points spent in his ability.

I bought it but haven't started it, due to it being REALLY hard to concentrate on a new RPG in July while living in Alabama with your A/C out.

But of course I'm going to be playing through DQ 9

Yeah your right. I was under the impression that you retain your character level when class switching.

I don't remember recommending it hardcore, but I did play that one for about 20 hours. I thought it was really cool at the time but I never did complete it.

EDIT: Actually, I think I remember finishing Dragon Warrior on NES waaaay back in the day and I really got into DQ Rocket Slime on the DS!

Sadly no, but it is easier to grind when one of your character is level 1 vs the rest of the grp. Plus the equipment is not level based.
