Good help/info site for Mass Effect (first one)?

    Hi guys...
So I am just getting into it... but finding out I need some help on the game... so I was hoping for info/walkthrough site for the game...

I forget what planet but it's my first one (with Saren and matriach messing up some kind of snowy area's research place?) and need some pointers... thanks.

The wiki is a great reference.

    Pointers:
Don't try to be neutral if you want all conversation options to be open. You have to be highly paragon or renegade for that.

If you're a completionist, visit all side planets. I stopped caring because they were all the same and just beat the game (which is awesome at the core, no doubt).

My big thing is (and Wiki doesn't seem to address this)

    1. Those quick slots on the top left of the screen... where do I assign them? I'm guessing it is only for weapons? Or is it also for skills?

    2. Are the skills all passive? Or do you have to assign them to slots for some of what seems like active ones?

    Try the walkthroughs at Gamefaqs.com

I usually find that they have pretty complete descriptions of all the controls.

And the quickslots are for your skills and weapons.
While anywhere you can pull your weapon, do so and hold the space bar down (like you would if you wanted to assign actions for your party members)
While in your combat menu, simply drag any skill you want to one of the open locations in the quick slots. It will assign that skill to that slot.

*Edit: Maybe it's because of how I play, but I found my party members useless.

I just finished it over the weekend, great game. I don't think the quick slots do much, mouse wheel selects the weapon and spacebar for special powers.

The fight with the Matriarch was a *****, hardest in the entire game - including the end.

Yeah, I went up the snowy roads to the lab and died when that big robot showed up! >.< Obviously, I need to figure out how to use the special powers! Busy weekend and being tired prevented me from playing it at all ...
