Stumped! - Boot Fail with USB Keyboard = (
I just built a surprisingly quick little budget gamer for 240 bucks. It's the one in my sig.
When booting with a ps2 keyboard-all is well. When attempting to boot with a Logitech USB illuminated kb the machine refuses to boot after shutdown.
Legacy usb is "enabled" in the bios.
Any ideas guys?

On boot-the bios hangs up at: initializing usb controller for about 45 seconds. with a ps2 keyboard, it flies right past that point and on into Windows every time.

Did you load the Logitech drivers? Not all USB devices can use the generic driver included with Windows.
I use Logitech drivers with my keyboard.

Yep, I even downloaded the newest Setpoint drivers from Logitech as opposed to the cd that came with the keyboard.
As long as I boot with a ps 2 keyboard, no problem at all. What I'm having to do is plug in my usb KB after booting into Windows w/ps2 KB.
I can then use the usb KB, even restart-but cannot do a shutdown and then hard start. That's when the bios hangs at "Initializing usb".

It sounds like a bios issue, not a user software issue. Good luck.

"issue"? As in incorrect selection in the bios? The bios is dated 5/2010 so it's not very old.

I've seen such issues with thumb drives and other USB devices, but not a keyboard. Maybe try a USB port not directly near the one you are using. Usually the USB controller is broken up into multiple controllers in configurations of two at a time. It may be that particular pair that is having the issue, which would still indicate a BIOS issue, but worth a try.

Found this on another forum
There is a thread elsewhere on the boards for a different Dell computer regarding the new Logitech illuminated keyboard that stops the Dell computer boot process just prior to windows start. I thought I would share the following regarding an alternate illuminated KB that works.
Just an update since several XPS owners have concerns. I now believe this is a Logitech issue and NOT a Dell Bios problem. I just installed a Saitek Eclipse III illuminated keyboard to replace the Logitech KB that was causing my Dell PC to stop booting. The Saitek booted normally just like my Dell multimedia KB that was provided with my new XPS9000.
The Saitek was the same price. Watching the boot process carefully, when the white bar starts growing to the right (prior to a popup saying windows is starting, the boot process stopped at about the 35% point when the Logitech KB was connected to a USB port. With the Dell KB it pauses briefly than continues. When the Saitek is connected, it pauses for less than 1 sec, then the KB lights come on, then the boot continues. Based on the above, it seems that Logitech utilized some non standard interface which is conflicting with Dell BIOS. And since the Saitek is illuminated thru the USB cord and the computer boot is normal, this seems like proof that Logitech should own the problem.
I admit that the Logitec is a better looking illumination thru the key faces where-as the Saitek is illuminated on the sides of the key. But the tacit key feel is the same and the Saitek KB has more multimedia and shortcut keys.
hope this helps!! :-)

update
Hey guys-thanks for all your information/suggestions.
Turns out I have bigger problems than the USB/Keyboard issue.
I booted into safe mode and w/networking and noticed the hangup here:
CRCDISK.SYS
Apparently this a common problem that be very difficult to repair. There seems to be no consensus on the correct way to fix this.
Page after page of suggestions on deleting certain files, to system restore, to running repair from the Windows disk all the way to buying a new hard drive...

This one seems like a good one.....
i downloaded the drivers for my sata hard drive... then when i reinstalled vista i hit f6 to install third party drivers......you need those drivers on a floppy before you install windows... go to your motherboard maker website and they will have them there

I think I may have the problem solved....
Installed Windows 7 and booted with the logitech USB keyboard.
It still slows and takes a long hard look at : "Initializing USB" in the bios-but then goes on into Windows. We shall see...

gurutoo,
just a passing thought, whenever I get a piece of hardware that presents problems constantly, time to move on. I have had pieces of hardware that I have found solutions and workarounds, some of the fixes were easy (drivers, etc), but sometimes certain pieces of hardware just don't go well with the current config u r using, even after fixing.
sometimes one must give up athestics for functionality...
save the keyboard, it prolly will work with a different config.
laterzzzz............
I am gettin too old for all this st.ff!

Master of the obvious
I just had a similar issue with a 'Fellows' brand USB cordless mouse. It was working fine for a couple of years and then wouldn't boot anymore with that mouse receiver plugged in. Switching to another USB mouse solved the problem.

Sadly, I'm going to have to call the dogs and piss on the fire regarding this issue. Other than this one issue, this budget beastie screams-it simply will not boot with a Logisys usb illuminated keyboard regardless of bios settings.
For those of you who are good with this sort of thing-these are the messages I get:

OS 6.06001.2.1.0.256.6
Local ID 1033
BC Code c2

bcp2 0000110b
bcp3 E31FAC78
bcp4 929B438
I tried Googling those codes with no luck.
Edit: BTW-I recently added a new 500gb Seagate Barracuda/500 Watt Antec PS with no effect.

I've had similar issues with Logitech G15 keyboards. Particularly with ASUS motherboards. The issue is that the machine attempts to boot the flash memory in the Keyboard. The work around is simple, unplug the keyboard when booting and plug it back in when booted, but not a solution, I realize.
