I hit bedrock at the bottom of my staircase, and I've been systematically digging out all available "diggable" materials, and replacing it with glass. So in the areas where there is a break through the bedrock to the sky, you can see it. It also gives me an indicator of day/night when I'm down in the pit, digging away. I tried powering them with lava, but it got too expensive in iron for buckets. I've now got a farm of trees. My original farm was too close to my lava moat. It kept catching on fire.
Have you tried coal? I've got about 400 coal right now - it seems pretty plentiful on my current map.
