Currently I have it starting with the following parameters (or will, once I get it up and running):
Code:
[james@mail:/home/minecraft$ cat start_server.sh
java -Xms2048M -Xmx2048M -jar minecraft-server.jar nogui
The extra memory doesn't hurt the rest of the server much, and I would imagine it couldn't hurt the minecraft instance either.
Unless the players start messing with massive amounts of TNT, 1GB of memory for the process is more than enough. Just to keep it from taking up a huge chunk of memory, it might be better if you set it as "-Xms1024M -Xmx2048M" this way the server will grab 1GB initially then have room to grow to 2GB if needed.

Funny you should mention that. I made the change after I posted it. lol No reason to pre-allocate half of the machines memory before it's needed.

If we had to reset it after a bunch of people put in work after the update, though, that would kind of suck.
Would work just fine either way, of course. Just throwing another view out there.
Go for it. Alot of mp changes and fixes will be made but in theory that should only make it better. Honestly though, it sounds like any old worlds just get upgraded so no blowing up involved. Really up to James.

They kind of do. Notch mentioned that biomes will appear in your current maps, but you actually have to travel beyond the borders of what you've already discovered (thus generating new land) to find them. In other words, you won't find them in any of the land that you've already discovered. You could extrapolate that to mean all the new stuff, though of course that's just an assumption, but what else would he do, just randomly change existing blocks into one of the 6 new types? Surely at least some of the new types are directly related to biomes.
I imagine other stuff, like the new enemy, can show up pretty much wherever they want, and nobody really knows anything about the portals to hell at this point.

I should have it up and running by late tonight/tomorrow.
Currently I'm working on un-fubaring everything that was borked up during the Ubuntu upgrades. Once email/etc. is flowing properly, then I'll launch the server and let you know.
*Edit: In theory the base server is back to normal(-ish), and I'll start working on getting Minecraft up.
*Edit2: Getting errors running the jar. I'll do more research when I get home.

I have an idea for my multiplayer spawn point building, but I will need a minimum of 3488 cobblestone and 4 buckets of water for it.

That makes sense, but then you would expect a server wipe every upgrade and i think people get attached to their home base. Do you want a new world right away or lose all your progress?

I fell off from reading this thread, so it may have been mentioned already, but I saw an article in this month's Game Informer about this game. Cool to see the game getting the hype and props that it deserves.

Yeah I did. For 3 days at work I had almost unending conference calls about upcoming projects, so I had a LOT of unoccupied time at my desk. Tomorrow looks to be the same, so my next project is going to be a minecart highway in the clouds.
