That's kind of the point of what he's trying to do though, I think. I used to have no fear whatsoever of wandering around outside at night. Really, I used to have no fear doing anything, since you could see enemies coming in the vast majority of cave systems so I only really worried about skeletons and their range. Now enemies even spawn in deep mines if there are torches around.

If all else fails just make a moat around whatever you're building. A 1 width empty trench alone will stop most things from getting to you; just have to worry about them timing a jump perfectly to get over it.

I'm fine with the increased mob activity but I'm not fine with the SKELETONS RIDING ON THE BACKS OF SPIDERS. Seriously, no. NO!

So I take it this is all in Single player?

Man I wish SMP was fixed. Pretty bummed that the slip doesn't work in mp.

Apparently they were doing it earlier, due to some kind of bug. He made it more consistent, and now it's a feature. lol

Notch has stated that his main focus is on getting the MP to work. Apparently this most recent update is the exception in that it was mostly all SP stuff; the last few have been a lot of SMP updates.

Last night I dug a pit and then built a tower to the top of the sky where I proceeded to get stuck in the 'ceiling' (building a skydiving ride of sorts). I seem to be permanently stuck there. If an admin is going to be on later, let me know. I've got a nice view but I do miss moving around and being able to do things

I've had the same issue. Try typing /home and that should send you back to the spawn point.

The problem with that is they get stuck in the moat and then they never catch on fire. I have about 10 dudes in the moat around my house that won't die during the day.

I like the survival bit, but this seems to be a round about way of making it seem "scary" or difficult.

But you can still build unmolested while they get trapped, which was the point. After that it takes exactly one bucket of lava to kill them all at your leisure.

I don't think it's roundabout at all, you're supposed to be scared of the dark from the very beginning and the basic mechanisms were in place to do that. The only difference now is that there are enough enemies around so that you actually ARE afraid of it and have to plan accordingly. I never used to really care about going out at night because most of the time I would only run into one or two enemies anyway (though of course there were bunches sometimes as well). Now as soon as the light goes darker a bit, signalling sundown, I start running for my base.

I mean, you complain about not being able to do anything at night but mine or go AFK, and when presented with a very easy way to do things at night you find something else that you don't like about that solution that is, again, very easily fixable. Remember that the game is still in the Alpha phase, and it will likely change a LOT between now and future releases. There's a peaceful difficulty setting that you can switch to on the fly if you really want a building simulator or a few hours of unmolested construction, but for other difficulties this is not a game that was meant for you to just run around doing whatever you want without taking precautions and setting up defenses.

I believe it is round-about to simply increase the mob count and make them randomly spawn. But that is just semantics on my part.

Right now my day consists of farming pigs to heal from a night of having to clear my mine so I can mine a few bricks to be able to place a few more bricks on my house before it is night again. Repeat. There is very little progress to be made. Once you clear your mine and there is not any location for them to get into the mine, then they shouldn't be able to spawn there. I can understand if they activately dug holes and tried to get into your mine, but right now they just randomly spawn without having to have access to the mine... which, IMO, is a "round about" way of doing it

They should only be spawning in the lowest levels of the mine, as notch has been saying for weeks that the closer you get to bedrock the more precautions you'll have to take. Specifically, he said that more light than normal would be needed to prevent the spawning, but I don't know that he's actually implemented that yet; I think they just spawn when you're that deep regardless of light at this point (again: alpha build). When the update first went live people were apparently having things spawn right in their living rooms, which I believe was fixed in one of the small after-updates.

I haven't had nearly the amount of mine-spawning problems that you're having. In three or four nights so far, I've had two enemies spawn down there and they were both on the same night. That was night two, which I think was actually the first night that the mine existed (since night one consisted of me actually digging the mine); afterwards, I threw up some more torches and haven't had any problems since (which admittedly could just be due to low sample size of only a few nights).

How deep is your moat? It might be possible to drown them.
