Alright! Update: About 60% done with construction of the outer shell. All the credit to deja for helping me out so much, I really would be no where near this mark with-out him. I hope to finish this in the next couple of weeks depending on how much time I get with the game. I have sand for maybe the 75% mark, but that still means I need about 4000 blocks of sand still.
A majority of the sand used came from underneath the pyramid, about 25% came from a pit nearby to the west. I am looking at the pits east of the bunker for the remaining sand.
The inside of the pyramid will be made into a city, if you have any ideas as to what/how to build it let me know. This is by no means only my project, and I wish everyone who is interested in helping does so. Right now, I still need some sand, and ideas.

Alright, I'm sick of trying to clear out this dungeon I just found that I wandered into from above. I'm out of arrows and I'm very far from home.
Time to find some lava and drop a bucket on these *****es.

Was cleaning up and modifying the entrance to my "city". (water/lava/water, keeps mobs out and you safe if you catch fire).
God D#$*(&@ creeper got me and ruined the entrance right before I had to logout. I think I lost everything, buckets, last of my diamond gear, a bunch of coal and redstone dust. :sigh:

Alright, so, I know Adi is building that walkway up near his place, and all of us have tunnels somewhere. So, what I have done is make a tunnel system that is 3x3 and as of now connects my 3 main projects: home base, pyramid, and bunker. There is an entrance behind monroeski's original mine entrance.
If you would like to connect to it, the tunnels are 15-17 blocks below sea-level. So if you were to build a 2x1 tunnel to it, you would want the bottom at 17 blocks BSL, and the top at 16 blocks BSL. I only ask that longer sections of tunnel that is added be in the 3x3 format, short offshoots don't really matter to me.

Next time you're in the tunnel, hit F3 to show your coordinates and tell us the Y value (which is height from the very bottom of the world). That will be more exact and easier to work with than giving us a measurement below sea level.

Alright, did as you asked, y-value is 48. According to deja, the deepest water is 11 blocks, so that's why I chose 15 below, just to give me a little leeway but still be close to the surface.
I never knew about that debug info view. Thanks for the tip monroeski.

I found a jpg the other day that showed the various levels at which things appear in Minecraft (ex. levels Iron shows up, where gold shows up, the levels water can be in, etc.). I'll post it later tonight when I get home.

nm, found it again.

Kind of a general guide than a set of hard limits (coal appears everywhere, not just 64-127, for example), but still fairly useful. The water level is pretty accurate for lakes and such, I believe; you'll still find random spouts deep underground, but as long as you tunnel at 45 and below you shouldn't ever hit the bottom of a lake. 48 will probably get you under most lakes, but there's a chance you'll hit one.

I think all of my tunnels (and they are numerous and lengthy) are at depth 52 or higher (excludes tunnels used for mining). Almost all of them are 2x1, but I wouldn't object to anyone making them 3x1 (possibly wider too, but there might be problems where certain staircases don't really allow for being wider).
I was trying to find ways to make my tunnels more interesting: so far I put up paintings in one, and started a wheat farm along another...open to other ideas.
I've been wondering for awhile whether it would be worth it to used dyed wool in the walls to mark direction, e.g. red on right side means you're headed north, red on left means south, green on right means east, green on left means west (so you'd only need to "code" one side of each tunnel, and one wool every 10 or 20 blocks would be sufficient, maybe even less). Just so you have a general idea of where you're headed when underground and it would be more colorful.
The nice thing about green is that cacti are incredibly easy to farm. The rest of the dye colors are either limited (flowers, etc) or difficult (squid, etc) to get. I supposed we could just use green or white, but white is boring. 
I'd like to get better at tunnel navigational signs, too....
p.s. I'm not sure if this would be helpful, but I think in Cartograph there is a way to map only the underground stuff. If we had an overhead map of the underground, that might be good enough for making a tunnel map. Then again, it might just show caverns all over the place and confuse us all.

You could always code with torches. Same basic principle as with the colored wool, but you're going to be needing to place torches no matter what so you may as well use them for something other than light.
