    Trouble with IE

I show that I have both IE 8 and IE 9. I launched IE from a shortcut and for the past month, it has been giving me all kinds of problems, toolbar flashing, error messages saying I can disable add ons if I want, won't let me go to any site.

So, I wanted to d/l IE 9 again but it said I already have the current version. I tried uninstalling 9 and it won't let me uninstall it. It's still there.

Any ideas on how I can start from scratch and get rid of both IE versions and then download a fresh copy of IE 9? I use FF most all the time, but I do like to have a back up of another browser.

and BTW, my performance generally is very slow, even FF keeps saying "not responding" many times. I use Avast running all the time, so there's some protection there. I also ran Ad-Aware and Malware Bytes and Spybot not too long ago.

    Thanks!

If you want a backup browser, have you tried Google Chrome?

IE is just horrible. I wouldnt even recommend trying to save it, just uninstall it as it's a hunk of crap that shouldnt be inflicted on humanity ....

When does FF stop responding and do you have version 3.*.*.16 or FF4? Do you get issues on flash sites? I noticed that FF3 versions were horrible with flash, the plugin always crashed. FF4 is somewhat better, but flash is still a thorn in my paw ...

I would recommend as well as running all your security stuff occasionally, give Hijackthis a try as well with no browsers running at the time. It will list everything running at startup and all the browser toolbars and BHO's.

    http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/produc...HijackThis.exe

Feel free to post a log of your hijackthis report here. Then if you're unsure, we can all advise what you need to select to remove. It will probably be a rogue toolbar or something, causing most issues ....

Thank you for your reply wh666:

So, how do I uninstall IE altogether? It won't let me do it by going to Programs and Features, Uninstall (in CP). What happens is the progress bar goes across, but then I restart and there is still is, both versions, IE 8 an 9.

I have not tried Google Chrome, I will check into this.

I have FF 4.0.1. I have not pin-pointed *when* FF gives me the "not responding" message, but I do use my web cam a lot, so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it? But it also does it when my web cam is not in use.

I do have Hijack This on my computer, so when I run it, and post the log here.

Thanks! Please answer if you can about how I can uninstall IE from my computer.

About my log of Hijack This

When I reply to this thread, it's saying I need to stay within a certain character maximum, so how do I show you my log here?

Don't worry about uninstalling, its not hurting anything. Just install chrome and use it. I actually prefer Iron, it uses chrome's source code but does not have the tracking elements that google adds to chrome.

You get something like 1000 characters max in each post. If it won’t fit in one post, feel free to paste it across multiple ones.

When you open hijackthis, you can do a system scan with log file option. The notepad will open afterwards for you to copy from.

Interesting, haven’t come across Iron, may have to give it a try.

Personally, I’m not too keen on Chrome, but recommend it as its stable and lightweight. Gahhh if only the same could be said for FF4

    Lol ....

Even if you are lucky enough to use any IE versions without instability, it's still horrible.

I can’t see how MS can be so retarded to be honest. Every time I think of people in the IE development team, I picture this:

And their development manager probably looks something like this:

Earlier versions of IE were quite frankly dreadful from a rendering point. MS has always stuck two fingers up to W3C standards and ignore how everyone else renders pages. Worse still, IE7 and before, used to be very unpredictable when rendering and sometimes just give up and render a page however it wanted.

Across the world, web developers to this day, still rip out their hair in frustration. On sharkies sister site, webdeveloper.com, you don’t even have to search for posts with people coding sites that will render everywhere else, then render with IE completely differently.

Security is a major concern and only addressed in IE9 and IE10, it's too soon to tell if they will suffer the same vulnerabilities, especially across social networking that previous versions have.

They are still miles behind with add-ons as well. MS is one of the biggest software players in the world, they should have come up with this or within a year, bettered it. Yet they haven’t. Add-ons are so advanced with mozilla now, that you can sync your entire browser.

Then the main problem is OS support. Seriously, why is Microsoft so retarded? I can’t understand how! They are supposed to have intelligent people working there, but all I see is retards that frankly shouldn’t be going outside without a crash helmet. Call me a hater if you will, but I think a competing browser, that will only work on one OS (IE10, not an option for linsjean) or two OS's (IE9) quite frankly so retarded, I would prefer Timmy's turkey, gobbbblllleesss! This is what you feel like if you download IE9 or IE10:

Fair enough, if your software is so supreme or niche and there is no worthwhile competition, you can afford to be 'cocky' and limit your software to certain OS's. However when competition offers better software, for free, across most platforms, restricting your software like MS does, because they are too inept to get IE working on more than a couple of different OS's is just humiliating.

In user reviews as well, FF4 vs. IE9 has shown to be slightly more stable overall. A handy infographic below, shows how IE, still up to IE9 are struggling for compliance. They've had over a decade, now this is just getting embarrassing for everyone:

    Compaq A910em: T2330 dual core 1.6Ghz, X3100 384MB GPU, 160GB sata HDD, 2GB RAM
    Gaming rig: Asus Striker II, Coolermaster GX 750w, E4600 @ 2.4Ghz, 2.5GB RAM, Zerotherm FZ 120, 9500GT 1GB
    Server: Mac mini running W23k Server - 1.8Ghz dual-core, 1GB RAM, 1x80GB, 2x500GB externals + LTO1 tape backup

Tinman, Thanks for your response. A friend of mine says Iron is yet another Google product and it does have tracking elements. How do you know that Iron does not have that? I am bothered because I do not understand why IE will not uninstall. l Why can't I just remove it manually? Is there a way to do that?

I'll highlight things that are ok to select to remove in green. Also if you look at R1 ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:6092, that explains why you cant view any sites with IE.

So all the ones previously highlighted green are safe to remove and will speed up the system.

You can speed it up more by selecting in this section and the first one, additional services you dont need to run. For example I left skype, but if you dont require it to run on boot, select it for removal in the previous section. All it means is java will detect updates when launched and not hog memory on startup searching for updates. If java, realplayer and everything is all trying to update and launch at once, everything will crawl.

Let us know though, after you have removed the green ones, if you want to strip it down and speed up the system more, then we can look at other things to remove.

PS: Dont worry about this removal, hijackthis stores backups just in case anything goes wrong, which it wont.

    You can, sort of, ish!

One of IE's thorns is it has always been near impossible to remove completely. On the windows update site, browser choice is an update that gives you the choice of browser, then installs it if you dont have it and SHOULD remove IE.

If you cant un-install your IE version from add/remove in control panel, then it may be listed in add/remove components in the same pane.

I wouldnt worry about removing it completely though if you dont want it, dont use it.

For all intents and purposes, IE can be "removed" by going Programs in the Control Panel and clicking "Turn Windows features on or off". I'm not sure if this physically removes the files, but the system will act as if they don't exist.

IE9 is quite nice though for a bundled browser. Equal to, if not better than Safari on OS X.

Comparing IE9 to Firefox or Chrome as it relates to emerging standards is quite fair. Firefox/Chrome enable and deprecate features on the regular. Microsoft ends up having to suppor their software for a decade or more.
