I was having that problem too, and it still happens for me on singleplayer. I decided to just wait the lag out on the Sharky server, and it quit. I think it has to do with generating chunks.

Interesting - I noticed that it seems to get worse and then everything in game slows down to about 2/3 speed. This happens probably about 2-3 mins in.

We'd need to do the nether-portal-room, and then also create the overworld portals that would link to them (meaning we'd have to walk out to wherever they'd be).
And then if someone created another portal (for example, 100 overworld paces in the same direction as the far one), the nether portal would likely start taking you to there instead of the far off place you expected to go.
At least, that is my understanding of how it all works.
(actually, I think a small portal room wouldn't really work at all, see below)
Example:
- create first overworld portal at 80,80...this would create a nether portal at approximately 10,10 (divide each by 8)
- then create another nether portal at 40,10 (30 paces away)...going through that would put you at the closest overworld portal to 320,80 (multiply by 8) which is the still the original one from the step above
- create a second overworld portal at 800,80...this portal would now go to the closest portal to nether 100,10 which is your second nether portal...so far so good, but...
- however, the second nether portal would still go to the closest portal to 320,80 which is still the original overworld portal
Yeah a portal room won't work. You'll need a system where you still have to walk from portal to portal. I think your right, although we could just make portals every 129 in the nether which would create a new portal in the overworld since the search/link limit of portals in the nether is 128 block radius from the arrival point. If be build one beyond that, a new one will be generated in overworld 1024 blocks away from the first one. . This would be one way to do the manual portals intially for long distance travel.
But the best way is to match one to one locations. If you do, a portal room area will work since the location of the portal serves as the destination point in world transfers. So if you build a over-world portal at 80x,80z,10y and a nether portal at 10x,10z,10y; then both portals will share a 1 to 1 relationship. You then could build portals at over world 100x, 100z, 10y and nether 12.5x,12.5z, 10y and still have them be 1 to 1 since their locations match up perfectly.

What we may want to do, is head to the nether and disable the portal on that end (fill it in or mine blocks). Then move the portal in the overworld to a closer location. Once the over world portal is created, it should spawn a new nether portal within a 16 block radius of the destination point. From there we can work on building 1 to 1 portals or even ones spaced out 128 blocks for some long distance traveling early.

Check your memory levels. I've had it skyrocket and crash the game. No idea why. Seems to be an issue on my laptop.

From that slideshow, it sounds like in my original example, the 2nd nether portal at 40,10 would return you to 320,80 which is more than 128m from the original overworld portal, so it actually would create a new one. In other words, we only even need to take 16+1 paces in the nether before it is far enough to create a new overworld portal, which is not bad at all (although even a 32x32 "room" is pretty big).
Oh you added more:

This is the best idea, but of course...having portal travel from overworld 80,80 to 100,100 isn't all that impressive.
To get a good "fixed" portal link, we need them to be spaced reasonably far in the nether, too.
For example, 10,10 (to 80,80) to 500,10 (4000,10)...it's still a better to walk 500 than it is to walk 4000, it's just that making a safe path of 490 blocks through the nether might be a little more difficult.
p.s. For comparison, on the old map, it was only approximately 1000 blocks from spawn to the farthest "real" stuff we had in any particular direction. So even getting a portal to take us that far would be great.

That is true about the 16+ paces for the nether. If we build portals in the nether at least 16 spaces apart from each other then that would create a new corresponding portal in the overworld and we can use that to help build faster 1 to 1 portals. We would just have to do most of our portal creation (can't use water ) in the netherworld and make sure that portals are 16+spaces far. In that regard, a spacing of 30 would work for a relative fast intial portal system.
In general, I'm looking to setup a long distance system of 1 to 1 portals in all 4 directions.
Also even any one wants to give me some diamond so I can mine obsidian, then that would be awesome.

I noticed having the OpenGL setting "on" makes my system lag every now and then. Dunno if you have that enabled.

I had assumed all the signs outside the door and the stuff I had started to build in that apartment at the end of the hallway had marked it as mine. I guess I was wrong, since tk came in and remodeled the entire thing.
