I know it sounds weird at first but...why don't we just go in the same direction? Right now we have pretty much nothing in any direction (aside from the one portal). The only "goals" of exploring out farther are to find new stuff and open space to build, and for those it doesn't matter which direction you go. In the nether, we can just build a tunnel/hallway that has portal exits every however-far-we-decide-to-space-them. Then when 1.9+ versions come out (pre-release today, supposedly), we will still have plenty of new ungenerated map in the other directions.
p.s. We need to get the original portal moved/protected ASAP. First of all, it was disabled when I went to go there last night, and also minecraft has an issue where it seems to reload the map very slowly when you come back through. This makes you a prime target for creepers hanging around the portal.
p.p.s. I put 6 stacks (apparently 5 or less now) of melon slices in the food chest this morning.
I figured it might be easier to define a square piece of land now that's all 1.8. The next set of farther portals can be 1.9. and so on and so forth
This was my idea on the portal system:

For the current portal, we'll have to be careful about moving the portal if we want to maintain a 1 to 1 connection. We should calculate a new area first to make sure it works both in the nether and overworld. I've had issues where my portal gets generated in the nether air on a small block of land over a lava pit.
If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

I hadn't even considered this until now...
1.9 is bringing a lot of nether updates, including structures and new blocks, so technically we should be worrying about not generating too much nethermap yet, too.

Hmm..I think enderman are bugged. I've looked at them straight in the eye with no reaction.

So what about my idea for the portals? We could just hold off for now and maybe build one more portal in between the 2 current ones we have (1.8 Central or something like that). I think that gives us a decent amount of space to work with till 1.9 comes out,
For got to add, that the official release date is stated for November and we should see a 1.9 and 1.10 update before then.

They've been bugged for SMP since they were introduced. Apparently if you look OVER their head somewhere you can get them to aggro.

Dunno what's going on, but mobs keep getting into our base from somewhere. One creeper blew up near the apartment entrance, and I fixed it. Another ended up in my lair, but I lured it away and shot it with arrows. It's going to suck if my apartment gets blown up. Wish we could disable them. *sigh*

They're probably coming up from the mines below. Lets stick a door on that hole.

I noticed that too, so I put iron doors instead with the pressure plates so it closes behind you. If you don't want that, feel free to change it back to wood.

As a random note, I love trapdoors for ladder holes. No more falling in accidentally, or having an open access point.

Oh, and if anyone can open my pantry door, they will be rewarded with free cake in the storage unit. No cheating!
