Grats, Timman! The Winged Spear is seriously beefy; I've already got mine upgraded to +3.
I rang that first bell last night. Felt good.
After that I went back to the only locked door I found in Undead Burg and sure enough, one of the keys I had acquired opened it up. Down there I killed another boss, found a dude locked in a house (no idea where that key is) and eventually found my way into the sewers. After some exploration and killing a particularly large rat, I found myself staring at another boss... this one seems to shrug off my attacks. It killed me and that's where I called it a night. I also have no idea if I'm heading towards this "Blighttown" that the one NPC mentioned I should go to for the second bell, but at least I'm able to handle what's down here.
@Rush - I found a merchant that was selling the Transient Curse item. It's... kinda expensive.
I haven't found any mechants yet. I got to a part last night where there were two large skeletons with capes. One flanked me from behind in small corridor and I died. That's where I quit for the night. Also, how do you upgrade your weapons? Merchant?
Blacksmiths upgrade and repairs weapons/armor, not merchants. You can also buy items that let you do all of the above from any bonfire, which is awesome.
I found one blacksmith close to the Firelink Shrine bonfire in the area with all the ghosts (he also sells a couple of magic spells) and one just outside the church containing the first bell. If you are where I think you are, when you reach the church you'll have the option of either taking a left and going to the front of the church or going right across a short wooden bridge to reach the side of the church; take this side path and you'll find another pathway leading towards a building containing a bonfire and a blacksmith.

I got past that iron bull, is that around where you are talking about?
I found Blighttown as well last night, but I didn't stay long. I found a key that unlocks a secret passage into the ghost place (New Londo?) and connects it with the firelink shrine. Now I have a huge circle I can go in.
Also,
Spoiler
I found a place called "The Valley of the Drakes." You can get to it from the Darkroot Basin. You will find a bonfire and then an elevator. At the bottom if you hug the left wall, you will find some good loot, a surprise, and entrance into the Blighttown as well as a quick passage to Londo.
I managed to beat the Gargoyles finally. I only had one firebomb, which hurt them quite a bit but then I died haha. So, I had to fight them melee. I have a Winged Spear +5 and a Dragon Shield which helped a ton on the fire breath. I also killed my first Black Knight, which wasn't too bad. I explored much of Darkroot Forest and found an AWESOME ring. It increases Poise by 40, which makes me stand firm like a tank when taking hits with a shield. I also believe I am soul level 21 now.
I think I am out growing my Winged Spear, so I need to find something new. I got a Estoc, but I don't know if it is worth upgrading.
Some other things: I found a Butterfly boss, but didn't have any ranged so I had to just die. I also found what seems to be a giant swamp creature in the Basin.
I beat the mini-boss that guards the entrance to Darkroot forest from the blacksmith at the church. He was easy, but has a ton of HP/defense.
This game is awesome for sure! Also, I haven't been able to find any arrows. I think it may be because I accidentally killed a merchant early on...
Yeah, the Winged Spear is feeling a bit weak for me too, but I've only got it at +4. I managed to get a MASSIVE greataxe when fighting the Gaping Dragon, but it's got a Str requirement of 50! Where did you get that Dragon Shield!? Where is Darkroot Basin? I found a path to The Valley of the Drakes that's close to Firelink with a wooden bridge leading into Blighttown but I didn't really see anything else I could do over there.

Huge the wall along the cliff on the blighttown side. You'll see
I can't beat the butterfly right now. I have no ranged and can't outlast the magic attacks to get him when he lands... I wish I hadn't of killed that damn merchant.
Well, I ended up killing it. I feel really dumb. I forgot I could two-hand the weapon and hurt him for 50% more damage... He only needed to land 3 times then.
I cleared the Depths and got cursed once, so I had to grind some souls. Not too bad at the church area, about 2-3 clears and I had enough to buy the cure. The gaping dragon was pretty easy. I also killed the Haven guy and got an awesome ring. I bought a Crystal Shield from the merchant in the Depths and it is great against magic. I am trying to attack that Hydra that is sitting in the Basin right now. I got close to him once, but the surface drops off and you drown if you get too close... That's where I stopped.
Hey guy, I'm a bit behind on the game because I got knocked out in my soccer match Wed night. I had a breakaway and a defender ran into me, spun me around, and then his teammate freaking kneed me in the head. Concussions aren't fun.
So I finally broke back into the game yesterday as I was feeling much better - think I must have played for about 18 hours! Hit most of the bosses you guys mentioned. Right now I'm level 23 and just wiped out

the gaping dragon. Working my way back up the Depths was nerve-wracking with the 25k souls he gives you!
That dragon shield is very nice, been using that since the first hour I started. I used the master key to

unlock the Valley of Drakes door near where the down-lift drops you off, then after exploring a bit found a few loot items including that shield. Oh, and then that dragon killed me for taking it, haha.
Capra was actually really easy - I don't understand why people on other message boards are screaming about him. In fact, the only boss that really gave me any trouble is the current one I'm on, at the bottom of the Catacombs. Only fought it once so far, though - there must be a trick to it. All of the others - Capra, butterfly, gargoyles, gaping, etc. - have killed me fewer than 5 times (most fewer than 3). I still think this game is harder than Demon's Souls, but it's not quite as insane as I originally thought. Or maybe I'm not far enough into it yet.
The one area I haven't tried yet is Blighttown. I really want to finish the Catacombs as my character rolls right through most of it with ease. Then I might go back and try the New Londo Ruins again - there are just wayyyy too many ghosts there, and though they're not difficult 1v1 on level ground, the fact that they can go right through walls and across open air means a LOT of cheap deaths. Wishing for a shortcut there.
Character update:
Level 23 Pyromancer
Weapons: +5 winged spear, +4 heavy club, ghost knife, +5 heavy crossbow with heavy bolts, sorcerer wand, pyro hand
Shield: Dragon shield
Armor: beginning Pyromancer armor, all +1 - +3 (the resists on it are great!)
Spells equipped: fire orb, great soul arrow, great heavy soul arrow (bumped Attunement twice for an extra slot)
Estus Flask: +2
I watched the quick look for this and made me start playing Demon Souls again and this time I like it. If I ever work my way through Demon Souls I will continue on with this one. Any recommendations on which one to get (360 or PS3)?
For a good time add SenorDestro to your 360 and Steam friend list. PSN: PoopRiot

I did PS3 because the online is free. I've heard both have fps issues in certain areas.
