Minecraft, awesome one man game project

I've been building a tower north of Fort James. Here's a pic from the inside, looking up at a mock up of the design that's going on the roof. I'm thinking either obsidian or netherbrick for the design and lava for the negative space.

I can't figure out how to get in. Granted, it's nighttime and I'm being chased around.

I mean, ultimately I just tunneled througha wall and replaced it, but I still couldn't figure out how to open your steel door from the outside.
