I think it's good that we're making different proposals though. We should come up with options, then everyone votes. Ok, here's how I see our four options thus far (with drawbacks):
1: Stay with existing map (limited options for resources added over past year+)
2: Scrap the entire map and start over fresh (losing all of our work would be unfortunate)
3: Save the main base, James' Tower, Jamestown, Skull Tower, Caste/city, MK Tower (some people still lose their work, kind of unfair)
4: Try to save the majority of everything we've done thus far on the map (base map is still massive, long way to travel outside it)
No need to vote yet - in case anyone else has another proposal.
Here is a screenshot of the overview map:
http://s16.postimage.org/oobjnjovp/DS_map2.jpg
Red box = Linoleum/Dejarin's proposed crop
Yellow box = Rush/Impulse's proposed crop
Yellow vertex coords:
1) X = -540, Z = -640
2) X = 20, Z = -640
3) X = 20, Z = 50
4) X = -540, Z = 50
Red vertex coords:
1) X = -3000, Z = -1500
2) X = 1500, Z = -1500
3) X = 1500, Z = 1200
4) X = -3000, Z = 1200

Reason: added coordinates for proposed map crops

I'm okay with the yellow or nothing at all. Thinking of the time it took to build the MK tower it would be tough to let it go but a new map is always full of new possibilities.

No fair, your cropped picture doesn't show off the fact that my crop still crops out a large portion of the existing map.
I think I still fail to see what the issue is in option #1. Unlike with some of the old updates, I don't think there is anything that can't be found somewhere in our current map. If you want to find more villagers, jungle temples, etc you just need to go farther out. And if you don't want to be carting the stuff back or walking back and forth, then just stay out wherever it is, and that'd be pretty much exactly the same as starting a new map (out in the middle of nowhere). Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought the infinite world was supposed to be one of the main features of minecraft anyway.
I'd like to add options:
5. Save the larger crop, but don't use it as the center for the new map.
6a. Save the larger crop (or more) and use it as a concurrent map on a different port.
6b. Do 6a, and make the new map completely different (e.g. creative mode, or airplane/mounts mod, and/or economy mod, and/or peaceful mode, and/or flat world, etc) to make up for losing everything.
7. Try to save all the major stuff from the current map and merge it all into a scary condensed, mish-mash area rather than keeping it all spread out (dunno what this would do to underground stuff). Or just place the features into separate random locations in the new map.
8. Move the spawn point about 5000-10000 blocks away from it's current location.
Also make sure that jtpacke, Gus, and Broo2 get to have their say, because they all have a lot of time into the current map but rarely or never post here.

Has got that jut
I honestly think it would still be fun to just take the main base + tower, we all just spent so much time in the Jamestown area when we started out that it's practically part of the main base IMO. Probably think that way because there was so much literal running and riding back and forth to that area before the portals went live.

Jamestown started off as my project and I think (might be wrong) that I did most of the "revitalization" of it, including the rails leading to it (was just an NPC village before that). I'm fine if Jamestown is gone, but I don't know who else worked on it, so it's not entirely up to me.

Too many options, we don't even have that many people voting. Let's condense those into 1 or 2. Also, no point in adding maps on different ports - so few people play anyway, everyone should really be on the same map.
Ok, new revised voting options.
4: Try to save the majority of everything we've done thus far on the map (base map is still massive, long way to travel outside it)
5: Use the larger crop and move spawn point to one of its edges - easier to access new content
There are a lot of reasons for at least cropping our current world. Too far to travel for new content, tons of biome mismatches, awkward map collisions, way too many (unorganized) portals, existing environment is missing content that has been added in patches, etc.

I vote for #3. However, my vote is probably biased since the only big thing I built was in The End, which will be lost no matter what.

I will vote for #3 too.
I'll try and fiddle with it sometime this weekend to see how hard it is. (I will obviously be doing this with a secondary instance, not the primary one.)

Let us know if, when you save the geography, it saves what's in chests as well. May need to do a fair bit of mule runs on all my chests from all over the world.

Will do. I will be working from one of the nightly backups for the testing, so it will be from midnight on whatever day.

I was initially just thinking about regular chests but I guess you'd have to check the ender chests separately since they work differently.

Cool!
Were you able to play around with MCEdit (or another utility) at all? I don't know what functionality it allows - whether it's just basic cropping based on 4 coordinates, or if it allows more chunks to be kind of "pasted" together like Dej requested.

I did not. Sorry. I played Recettear this weekend and spent a lot of time outside. It was the first day of "fall" in my mind (cool and low humidity) yesterday and I went out and enjoyed it. I'll give a swing this week when I'm home in the evenings though.
