Need some more Mint help. Booting issue.

I posted a while ago about a microsever vs a NAS device. I ended up getting an HP proliant microserver. I finally got around to installing Linux Mint. The server does not have an optical drive so rather that screw around with putting one in just to install the OS I made a bootable thumb drive and installed and booted from it. Everything went fine and I was up and running. I installed to an ext4 partition on the SSD which came with the server. I installed Mint 13 LTS. I downloaded the latest update. When I did this it asked if I wanted a updated grub file which I declined. Anyway, I pulled the thumb drive and when I rebooted it would not boot. Replaced the thumb drive and it boots fine. It looks like the grub is located on the thumb drive for some reason. There seems to be a grub on the internal HD. Any ideas on how to fix this? I have already posted on the Mint forum but not gotten any responses.

It's a bit complicated, but you need to modify the grub installation on the SSD (not thumb drive) so that it will boot from it. The easiest way is to reinstall the OS and ensure that when it asks you where you want to install the boot partition/boot loader, you double check that it is putting it on the SSD, not the USB drive. The "easiest" way to do it without reinstalling isn't very easy. You need to boot into the system using the USB drive, install and configure grub on the SSD, then pull the USB and reboot. This is actually a pain (good learning experience, but a pain) to do. If you haven't gotten very far in the install, I would probably suggest the reinstall as the best course of action.

I would like to try to fix it if possible. I assume I would need to make a new usb install drive since the one I have now no longer gives me the install Mint option on the desktop. I found a page with a list of grub commands but I am at work now. I do not recall the install giving me a choice as to where the grub was installed. I might have missed it.

    Will the grub-setup command work?
