High End Video Cards

Hello,

I want to build a Windows 2000 box for CAD work, and very little games. As far as the video goes, I wanted the best graphics possible, with the highest speed, therefore look at high end gaming cards. What do you suggest. GeForce2 Pro, Ultra, Radeon (all at 64MB)? Also what is going on with the Det.3 and the KX133 Chipset(A7V)? What is the best??

If money is no object, you probably want high resolution, high performance. Whether your app does Direct3D or OpenGL, the GeForce 2 Ultra has the best memory bandwidth of any card out there, and thus will deliver the best high resolution performance. I don't know if there are multiple memory configurations on the GeForce 2 Ultra, but with CAD apps that use a lot of textures, always go with the card with the greatest amount of memory (probably 64MB). Hope this helps.

Arcadian is right, you may want to try out some of the new ELSA/NVIDIA Quadro-based GeForce 2s. They have optimtimized drivers for CAD apps. If money is no object that us...

Wouldn't the cards built for CAD type programs be better than a gaming card? Maybe an Oxygen or Wildcat card?

Just wanted to point out that there seems to be a way to change a GeForce 2 to a Quadro 2 easiliy...

You might want to check that out. That's a real price cut.

Other things :

Forget Wildcat. Their cards are great but more than expensive, and far too specialized (NT and OpenGL only).

As for stability, I know people, as I do myself who are doing CAD on Athlon based systems... Nothing to report till now... Rock stable... However, all components are quality (ASUS MBs, brand RAM, ...)

Xaen. 3DS Max runs fantastic on Athlon.
