Sound card lockup issues

I am running an Aureal Vortex 2 on my Abit KT7 system. I know that this is a bad choice, but it was the only thing i could do considering that NO SBlive cards would run on this box. This current card seems to lockup periodicly during game scenes that are rather intense on the system. It locks up in alice when that damn thing is flying around in the second level and it locks up in diablo2 when logging onto battlenet. I can not honestly figure out what to do. There are no IRQ conflicts here. Does anyone have any ideas?

In a lot of games you can turn off that buggy 3d sound (or rather it is the buggy through microsoft directx garbage interface to your sound card), and that may do it for you. I have had alot of buggy games work fine when I tried them without sound.
