    Question Oracle

I was wondering what the general feeling is towards the Oracle server and database? Is it an effective use of resources? Does it run smoothly for everyone else?

I only ask this because our program at work runs with an Oracle server, and we frequently have halts in the system where we can't access our information. Is this typical? or is this just traffic?

Oracle is a top quality, mission critical product. However, implementation is everything. It is very sensitive to resource limitations as are most database systems.

You did not indicate other symptoms, transaction rates or the platform (Oracle runs on all but the oldest platforms). You should review your situation with an Oracle certified consultant.

Hmm. thanks. The software is very new [it was made within the last 3 months], but I have no idea what platform the server is running on.

If you install it incorrectly it will be a dog. It is good to have it write log files to separate disk. I have written programs that skim through hundreds of thousands of records every second on a continual basis, but I have seen unoptimized brute force SQL bring Oracle to its knees just like any other DB if it is constantly being accessed. I think it's best performer out there, though; most likely the halts are network traffic problems or else unoptimized SQL.
