    Exclamation Athlon 1.1GHz vs P4 1.3GHz in Bryce5

Just benched my dads brand new work comp (P4 1.3GHz with 640MB rdram) against my Athlon t-bird 1.1 with 512Mb pc133 sdram in Bryce5.

Time to render the same file on both the comps:

    Athlon system : 1min 32sec
    P4 system: 2min 36sec

Both have win 2k and all the latest drivers.

    Well.. i'm glad i didn't buy a P4..

Tell us something that we don't already know! p4 is noot too good at stuff like that if it doesn't have sse\2 support. in apps like q3, its undefeated so far.

ROFLOL Umm last time I checked, Q3 was a game, not an App....that is unless you're still in kindergarten

Hehe.. SSE2 doesn't affect Quake3. John Carmack even said that there wasn't any and that the most likely attribute to speed increase was hardware prefetch. And both the Athlon MP and P4 have this.. thus that is why they both excel in Quake3. And IMO Quake 3 may be a very sensitive benchmark, but it's a game and does not need to be fast however when work is considered. Small rendering times are a DREAM.

Some people say 1 minute is nothing.. well not when you do it 100 times a day.

The Athlon does particularly well or the P4 does particularly poor in 3D rendering apps depending on how you look at it. A similar scenario exists with 3D Studio MAX. There's no question in performance per dollar that the Athlon is a better performer overall. Most people (speaking of informed experienced users) buy P4s because they're still leery of AMD platforms (sometimes with good reason), are brand loyal to Intel, or plan on upgrading to a faster Northwood CPU in a few months. There are also those that are willing to pay out the money for a 1.9 or 2.0GHz P4 which can outperform the fastest Athlon in most apps.

Eh? Becuse it isn't relevant. I actuelly use my comp for other things than playing games. It won't help to much if i get a million fps in quake when all i do is 3d rendering.

You're probably one of the few that actually uses his computer for work around here.

(no offence to the other 90% of forum members.)

Since Bryce 5 isn't SSE 2 optimised, that'd explain why the Athlon totally blows it away. Heck, I think even my Duron would beat that P4 score.

Hear-hear. I've got 3d-studio and am trying to learn it. It flies on my humble athlon (unlike the p-4!!!!!!!!). weakass x87, what else do you expect. Make a better fpu Intel - or suffer the consequences of poor sales! ;-)
Or just re-issue the p-3 (the one chip you make that does have an fpu) ;-)

Heh dont forget the Tualatin with the 512 L2 Cache, Man that chip can kick the P4's butt so bad it aint even funny.....overclock it to 1.4 then it even gives the Athlon some competition
