Athlon XP now, or wait for .13
I'm considering purchasing an Athlon XP system. I was wondering if it would be worth it to get it within the next month or two, or to wait until the .13 micron chips come out? What are your thoughts on that. Also, does anyone know if there is a KT266A mobo with RAID? Let me know what you think.

with your system I think you should wait, unless you just like to have top of the line stuff.

Well, the problem is that the system in my sig is only partially mine...the rest of it belongs to my parents. So I'm wanting to get a system that is completely mine, and still fairly top of the line. That and I just like having new stuff. My main problem is that I'm gonna be moving out within the next year or so (possibly even getting married in that time), so I'm gonna need my own system when either of those happen. So, I was thinking about buying it a component at a time and using the stuff in my old system until I can get the new one up and running. I'm kinda leaning toward waiting for the .13 at the moment. But when is that due out? Let me know.

There is then possibility that the wait for .13 from AMD could be quite long and the benefits minimal.
My thinking is and has always been if you have a need for a new system now do not wait for that “next big thing” you will always have some reason to wait.

What exactly [i] are the benefits of the .13? I've heard its supossed to improve performance and such, but who knows. Yea, its probably better to just get it fairly soon, rather than to wait. But then again, if I can put off my processor purchase until last, the .13's may be out by then anyway. Speaking of which...does anyone have any idea when the switch is supossed to occur?

I'd say desktop .13 chips will show up this time next year. The notebook chips probably in May/june next year

Eh...I'll probably have my entire system built by that time. So, it looks like just the normal .18 XP for me...not worth waiting until then. Should have the entire system built by the end of the year.

The current XP chips are pretty cool. .13 isn't necessary yet for AMD so they probably won't switch over until the end of the year.
I'd just get an XP for now, but with your system you might as well just wait. Maybe do a little overclock if you want.
If you didn't have that sys I'd say get it, but it looks like you are in good shape right now, spend the money on a Radeon 7500 or GF3. Or maybe a bigger monitor.. remember the CPU is the dumbest part of the system, it may be nice, but you dont look at the for 2 hours like a monitor or hear through it, and it won't make your FPS at high resolutions go up like a good video card.

Well, like I said already...my current sys isn't completely mine. Partially my parents. My dillema is that I'm gonna be moving out in the next year or so...most likely getting married, but at least going to college. And I'm gonna need my own system. I'm gonna put the system together over time, purchasing on a *per paycheck* basis. I'll prolly save the mobo and cpu for last. So I'll probably end up getting a .18 XP, since I'll have the system together by the end of the year...barring any kind of financial disaster.
