Post Northwood versus Palomino: Place your bets!

This is intended to be a non-flame discussion.

The point of this pointless thread is basically to see which CPU you think will come out on top: Northwood 2.2 GHz or Palomino 1.67 GHz (2000+). They are both slated for similar release dates...

My personal opinion will be a repeat of what we saw with tbird 1.4 versus P4 1.8... pretty equal in speed, with the AMD part being the better buy due to price.

I'd say the performance should be about the same.

I think it will be close also. I don't think amd will win as hands down as they do with 1900+ vs 2 ghz P4. I think that northwood will win in a couple more benchies than the 2000+, due to increased speed and core enhancements.

I forsee that the Northwood at 2.2GHz will edge out the XP 2000+, but not by much. In any case, It definitely will not be worth the relative price.

Good answer. Speculation is for losers IMO. No offense db man. I say wait and see. But common sense would dictate that the northwood with it's larger cache will do better in the next round, especially in business benchies..

Nothing wrong with speculation, just take it with a grain of salt .

I suppose. But as was said, don't see the Intel offering being worth the extra $, even if it does edge out the AMD chip.

No, I'm running under 98. I have 2K, but my system is running so well, that I can't see moving to another OS just because. The next time I have to format and reinstall, I will then look at moving to 2K, unless XP issues/drivers/compatibility have been more thoroughly addressed.

Ah, just wondering - I'm thinking of picking up a Radeon 7500, but I'm running Win2k, so I was wondering how the Radeon1 drivers fared under 2k. tankya anyway.

My initial gut reaction was that the AXP would have a slight edge, but just for fun I decided to test this a little, and try and get a more analytical prediction.

To do this I took my previous estimate of 7%-8% boost per clock for the P4, factored in clock rate increase if 4% and 10 % along with a “scaling factor” of 0.6. The scaling factor accounts for the fact that performance doesn’t increase as fast as frequency.

    The resulting performance boost is
    AXP 2000+ 4*0.6=2.5% ( somehow I was expecting more)
    Northwood 2200 10*0.6+7=13%

The problem here is that the 7% number isn’t consistent. It’s an average. Some apps may gain 15% other may gain almost nothing. Anyway this is the best I can do quickly and easily.

I then took these numbers and applied them to the scores Anand reported for the 1900+ and Willamette 2.0 GHz here.
    http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1554&p=4

This allowed me to make some rough predictions as to which processor would win on which benchmarks. Any score that was closer then 3% I labeled as close, since these could go either way depending on how well Northwood does on that particular app. (I.E. closer to 15% or closer to 0%).
