Did AMD subestimate us?????
You invest lots of $ in R&D in technology and make your own scams, i mean, marketing tactics for your CPUs. Of course you want to protect it against "home-brewed improvements" a.k.a. Overclocking. Intel did a good job by making impossible to OC their processors. ( I guess the stuff is inside the die) But in the other hand AMD, which by the way I am starting to respect, has this great chips that you can OC with some careful steps. Why did AMD didn't protect their CPUs like Intel? DO they need to have those L1 locks exposed?? I don't get it. (of course I love the idea of unlocking the L1 contacts, but I don't understand AMD. They made it easy for us to OC them?? subestimation of their market??) Thanks in advance...

first off...intel cpu's can be OC'd, but by fsb only...they have a locked multiplier.
amd makes it far from "easy" to OC their processors...at least the new XP's. they really don't care if you OC them, they just don't want you to wreck it...and be able to return it for a new one, so they make sure they can tell if you unlock it or not.
btw...what is subestimation? cause i don't think its a word.

I think he means under estimation......but yea its not really that "easy" to unlock an XP (unless you get the MP) and they dont wanna get ripped off (like Moledude said). I just wish that the acknowledged the overclockers out there and gave us an already unlocked chip.....although I'd gladly give up any warranty to get an unlocked chip since I'll probably void it anyway.

AMD left the bridges exposed specifically for the purpose of catering to this very type of crowd..the o/c. However, they do have to protect the margins they do have, and that is hard when the chip comes fully unlocked or is so easy to unlock that the fact that it was can be masked.

RPG JUNKIE got it right: sub=under, so YEAH! I just created a new word! COOL! and about the AMD exposed L1 locks , I never thought they would ever do it on purpose for the OCers. GREAT! one more reason to lean to the AMD side. Take a walk in the "wild" side, babe.

Personally, I think rather than the L1 bridge trenches they should have just put a sticker over the L1 bridges with a warning that the warranty is void if removed. That way, if you want to unlock the chip, you would have no choice but to remove the sticker, and immediately void any warranty that you may have had.

yeah i would go for that
i think also, the point of the trenches, was to deter the weak hearted, who dont have the skill to do it! now they know that people who do unlock it, unless fried, then there wont be too many problems!

I'd go for that........I have no problems with doing something like that

I think Intel started doing that to stop crooked vendors from remarking cpus and selling them as faster variants than they really were, just by bumping the multi.
