Red face AHH! Is there a file system expert in the house?!?!

I have a bit of a problem with a folder that was created during a botched installation of a program; there is now a folder on my desktop that is name "_" (no quotes). Thats right, it is named underscore. When I try to delete it, i get a filesystem error that reads:

Cannot delete file: file system error (1026).

I have tried deleting it in dos, to no avail.
I really wish I could get rid of that annoying folder without having to reformat! Please Help!

    ok...

    1. searched the registry but cannot find it

    2. do not remember the program or whatever i was installing that did it, but it wouldnt matter if i did the install never completed.

    3. when i try to change the file name it give me the file system error.

    4. Do you mean file associations? I dont think i would want to change the file association for my folders....disaster would ensue!

    5. Eh, its not worth all the time i would spend downloading a bazillion program installers on a 56k and spending 3 days installing software....hehe....

    Issue:

Cannot Delete File: File System Error (1026).

    Cause:

This issue can be caused by one of two reasons:

Insufficient hard disk space on the computer.
A file is copied or moved to a disk, then deleted, and then the Undo Copy or Undo Move is clicked to try to retrieve the file.
Attempting to copy or delete a file over a network and the server is having difficulties sending the file because of security issues or high network traffic.
    Solution:

Insufficient hard disk space on the computer.

Verify that the hard disk drive has at least 100 MB of free hard disk space. Additional information on how to determine available hard disk space can be found on document CH000369.

A file is copied or moved to a disk, then deleted, and then the Undo Copy or Undo Move is clicked to try to retrieve the file.

From the Windows desktop right click on the Recycle Bin and click properties.
In Recycle Bin Properties remove the check from "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted"
    Click Apply and then ok.
Note: The Undo Copy or Undo Move do not work with a removable media or floppy disk drive.

Attempting to copy or delete a file over a network and the server is having difficulties sending the file because of security issues or high network traffic.

Verify with the network administrator that there are no security issues or reports of high traffic at the time the error has occurred.

If none of that does the trick then boot to DOS, do a DIR until you can find the offending directory (to see how DOS displays it as it may have ascii or extended characters in the directory name) then RD <directory name> using * for any characters you can't reproduce.

Tried all that, still no luck. DOS doesnt even know it is there.

I think you might go back to the DOS approach. I have had a similar experience. Shut down to DOS and change to the desktop directory <don't just do a search>. If windows thinks it's a system file you may have to use the atrib command to unhide it. Also DOS may see it as a differnt name and may have truncated it, "~."

Try deltree dirname instead of rd dirname.

P.S. Be carefull with the deltree command because it deletes all folders and files in the directory
